Make Way for Ducklings

For at least ten years now, a duck has made her nest in the inner courtyard of Glover Elementary School in Milton, Massachusetts. When the ducklings hatch, the students eagerly watch for her to decide that it’s time to lead them to water, which means they must pass through the building to get outside. This year's event was captured on video.

The mother duck led her ducklings to the nearby pond last Wednesday.

More than 500 students sat cross-legged in the hallway and on the playground for the annual duck walk. Many of their faces lit up when the mother and her 10 newly hatched ducklings waddled by. The entire episode was documented on video.

Principal Sheila Kukstis said in an interview that the walk is a tradition for the elder duck, as well.

“The mother knows where she’s going because she’s done it before,” she said.

Cats vs. Hairbrushes

(YouTube link)

In this compilation video, cats encounter hairbrushes. They all seem to have the same reaction: “What is that? Get that thing away from me! Kill it! Or at least slap it silly!” My cats would probably have the same reaction, since I don’t use a hair brush, just combs. -via Tastefully Offensive

YouTube user Ekram Cagala spotted this cat in his backyard. He greeted him with a backscratch. The cat's vocal outputs malfunctioned, emitting an odd warbly chirping sound. Like most things cats do, it's weird but adorable.

Dash Cam Footage Shows Kangaroo Attacking Car At Midnight

I have it on good authority that Australia is full of kangaroos, and if you go there to visit you will most likely see a 'roo hopping around at some point during your trip.

This same authority will tell you that kangaroos are feisty critters that shouldn't be approached in the wild because they may attack, and a kick from their hind legs can cause grievous bodily harm.

But what the authority failed to mention is that kangaroos are so feisty they'll take on a car, using their mighty legs to take out a driver- Mad Max style. (Contains NSFW language)

Apparently Australia turns into an island of terror at night, where roving kangaroo wrecking crews patrol the roads looking for victims...

Dog Saves Hummingbird's Life. Now They're Best Friends.

(Video Link)

Rex the dog has come a long way.

He was a stray who lived a hard life of fighting other dogs and killing cats on the streets. Then Ed Gernon of Whittier, California rescued him.

Having been rescued, Rex pushed on the cycle of kindness. He brought Gernon's attention to a sick hummingbird, lying on the ground and covered with ants.

The pair nursed the bird, whom they named Hummer, back to health. Now Hummer lives with Gernon and Rex. She's Rex's constant companion. You can read more about them at CBS News Los Angeles (auto-start video).

This Little Pet Owl Loves To Take Baths

Wild owls bathe every once in a while, mostly by splashing a bit of water on themselves since their featers aren't as , but some wild owls don't seem to like to bathe at all.

It's unclear how little Trude would act in the wild, but in captivity Trude is a big fan of baths, and loves to float around in the bath like a wide-eyed rubber ducky.

Trude's human Kimora Hidetoshi enjoys sharing videos of the strange little bathing owl online so people can see what it's like to have a floating sack of feathers stare at you when you're lying naked in the tub. *shivers*

A Tale of Two Famous Kitties ...and The Librarian Who Loved Them

Neatorama is proud to bring you an excerpt from the new book The True Tails of Baker and Taylor by Jan Louch and Lisa Rogak (previously at Neatorama). It's the true story of two library cats who brought an entire community together beginning in 1983.

It all started with mice in the library.

Assistant librarian Jan Louch and a coworker decided that what the library needed was a cat. Or, even better, two cats. Soon, they found a pair of Scottish Folds who were perfect for the job. Jan named them Baker and Taylor, and they took up residence in the library.

But these cats were much more than mousers. Visitors to the library fell in love with Baker and Taylor and their antics just as Jan had. And then, after Jan let the cats be photographed for a poster, they became feline celebrities. Children from across the country wrote them letters, fans traveled from far and wide to meet them, and they became the most famous library cats in the world.

In The True Tails of Baker and Taylor, Jan Louch looks back and tells the remarkable story of these two marvelous cats and the people―readers, librarians, and cat lovers of all ages―who came together around them.

The patrons who loved Baker and Taylor were a diverse lot. From the young mothers and toddlers who came in for story time to the retired business executives who came in each morning as soon as the doors opened and headed straight for the reading room where they could read the newspaper for an hour or two, a cross-section of the community walked through the door every day, and I loved that about the library.

In the early afternoon, there was usually a bit of a lull at the library; the patrons who came in the morning and others who returned a few books on their lunch hour were gone. The next rush consisted of the high school kids who would come in to do their homework.

Baker was a people cat – the staff’s nickname for him was “Library Slut.”

Puppy Joins Litter of Kittens

A Chihuahua puppy named Bobby was only two days old when his mother was hit by a car and killed. The Michigan Humane Society took him in, but he was so young, what to do? They had a cat in residence with a litter of young kittens, and they just gave Bobby to her. Gwen the mother cat took to him like he was just another kitten.

(YouTube link)

Six weeks later, Bobby has settled into his new family just fine. The cats and puppy are all living with a foster family until they are old enough to leave Gwen and find forever homes. -via Buzzfeed
