Baby Rhinos

These baby rhinoceroses live at Care for Wild Africa Rhino Sanctuary in South Africa. Redditor Nkandla works there. He says they are fed milk every three hours, and make these noises when their milk is gone.

(YouTube link)

The sad part is that the little rhinos are in the sanctuary due to poachers killing their mothers

They should never have needed to come to us in the first place. They are the victims of poaching, even if they're still alive. We do everything we can to give them as normal a life as possible and the bigger they get, the less dependant on us they will become. Our bigger rhinos, which were once in the same position, are already grazing in the big open fields, without any form of human interaction.

We really do hope to have them back out in the wild one day!

Airline Makes Cat a Star

Krystal Scott and her family were evacuated from the Fort McMurray fires in Alberta last week. She went into labor during the process, and under the circumstances, the family’s cat Meow Meow had to be left behind. Canadian North Airlines staff said they would watch the cat. They kept her in the office for a few days, posted pictures of her on Facebook and Twitter, and even gave her a little employee name tag. Since then, Meow Meow has been reunited with her family in Calgary. See more pictures at Buzzfeed.

Alaskan Moose Plays A Jaunty Tune On The Neighbor's Wind Chimes

We hang chimes outside our homes so they'll catch the wind and play us a pleasant little song, but if you live in Alaska and hang up chimes you're actually asking for a personal musical performance by a moose.

Who knew the moose was such a musical beast?

(YouTube Link)

When Healy, Alaska resident Britta Schroeder awoke to this candid moosic-al performance being played on her neighbor's wind chimes she did the right thing and filmed the show.

And just to avoid the accusations that she lured the moose into her yard the video came with this disclaimer:

Healy, Alaska – As I lay in bed this evening, I could hear my wind chime blowing up, but when I looked out the window, not even a blade of grass budged. I should clarify that the blender and the red bucket in the video are part of a paper-making project and have no food, nor have ever had food, in either. The chest freezer is also locked.

One Slush Puppie, Please

The Siberian Husky knows how to play this game. Like a human hot tub, the dog Slush Puppie machine is the perfect way to relax.

In about a month, I'll want one of these for myself.

Funny Animal Mugshots From Around The World

I'm not sure if animals are getting used to having their picture taken and are learning to pose for portraits, or if it just seems that way since there are so many animal pics posted online these days.

Whatever the reason, animals are posing like never before, and even wild animals seem like they're waiting for some traveler to take their pic and post them online so people around the world can see how cute they are.

Chanel and Stevo from howfarishome.com are two travelers who love to post pics on behalf of internet deprived animals, using an ultra-wide angle lens to take "mugshots" of the friendly critters they encounter while traveling around the world.

It's only a matter of time before tech companies start making smartphones for animals, and if you think social media is crazy now wait until the world's critter population starts posting!

Heroic Dog Saves Little Girl from Snake

(Photo: AP/Tamara Lush)

Molly DeLuca of Tampa, Florida was in her backyard, watching her 7-year old granddaughter and Haus, her 2-year old German Shepherd, play. Suddenly, the dog reared up and leaped in front of the girl. Haus fought a diamondback rattlesnake that had sneaked into the yard and saved the little girl's life.

The snake bit Haus 3 times, almost killing him. Haus is now in intensive care for the severe kidney damage that he suffered from the venom. The AP reports:

The snake's venom damaged the dog's kidneys. Vets now expect a full recovery, but it won't be cheap: Each day in the ICU costs between $1000 to $1500, and each vial of anti-venom costs $618. Haus is averaging 4 or 5 vials per day as the poison leaves his system.

Fortunately, public recognition of Haus's heroics have led to overwhelming support for his GoFundMe project. He has received $35,000 after starting with a goal of $15,000.

Cat-Operated Whack-a-Mole

Ingenius. Lam Qian made a whack-a-mole game for his cat that doesn’t require human operation. It didn’t take long for the cat to figure out the lever system. As soon as he lets go of the lever to pounce on the “mole,” it disappears again!

I only hope the cat eventually realizes that there is more than one lever. -via Tastefully Offensive

This Cat Really Enjoys Eating Birthday Cake

Birthday cake is a really big deal when we're little kids, but as we get older it tends to lose its appeal and ends up shoved to the back of the table behind all the presents.

Decades later, when the presents stop being such a big deal and we don't eat desserts on a daily basis, the cake suddenly becomes a star again, a slice of sugary heaven that makes our age more bearable.

Humans tend to take birthday cake for granted, but for cats the cake is always a welcome treat, especially when it's covered in salmon mousse frosting.

So the next time you're feeling a bit down about your birthday think about all the pleasure this cute little kittie got from a piece of birthday cake and enjoy your big day!

Dog Runs away from Home, Checks Himself into Doggie Daycare

(Photo: Fox 6)

Riley, a 5-year old Golden Retriever in Belmont, North Carolina, has been coming to the Happy Dog Café dog daycare facility all of his life. He loves the place, as he can always meet and play with friends.

So he recently decided to visit on his own. He didn't ask his owner, Tonia Montseller. Instead, one day, he just took off and walked over a mile until he reached the daycare. Then he sat outside the door until a human went in.

The daycare owner, Teresa McCarter, found Riley and took him in. She called Montseller and let her know that Riley had decided to spend the day with his friends. This time, McCarter said, Riley's stay was free.

Simple Lessons Dogs Teach Us About Life

(Image Link)

Dogs may seem like simpleminded creatures when compared to cats, but that's just an illusion because their minds are always working out ways to get food, get pets and get their friends to play with them.

That's why they make great life coaches, because a dog's life is full of fun, good food and lots of leisure time, and who couldn't use extra servings of all three in their lives?

Dogs can teach us the basics, like you are what you eat

(Image Link)

Or more advanced life lessons, like how to keep your cool while sitting in rush hour traffic

(Image Link)

And if you learn the way of the dog the world will be your oyster

Penguins Don't Like Opera

(Video Link)

Nick Allen, a professional opera singer from the UK, performs on cruise ships that visit Antarctica. During a recent trip there, he met a colony of penguins. He gave them a free demonstration of the classical Italian song "O Sole Mio." The penguins, who are clearly uncultured philistines, immediately started running away. The New York Daily News reports:

"You could say they didn't like the sound of his voice," said zoologist Jarod Miller, host of the syndicated TV series "Animal Exploration." "Between his singing and his body language, they likely perceived him as a predator. While they didn’t seem to be fleeing for their lives, they appear to be uncomfortable.” […]

Moving en masse is doing what comes naturally for these beasts, says Miller. “If you’re a flocking or herding animal, you pay attention to your neighbor. So when penguins move, it’s like dominoes.”

Cat Reacts to Horror Movie

(Video Link)

This innocent cat gets an eyeful the first time he watches Alfred Hichcock's Psycho. Just as Hitchcock intended, his tension builds until it explodes.

Andrew Parrish edited this video of his cat, who is actually looking at a toy. He's too young to watch horror movies.

Mother Goose Summons Cop to Rescue Gosling

A goose came up to a police car in Cincinnati, Ohio, and started tapping at the door with her beak. Sergeant James Givens and Specialist Cecilia Charron got out and saw the goose walking away, but the goose turned to look at them, so they followed her. The goose led them to a gosling that had become tangled in a string that was tied to a Mothers Day balloon among the litter. The officers called the SPCA, but it would be a while before they could come. So Charon took matters into her own hands and untangled the baby bird while Givens recorded the incident on his phone. The mother goose stood by patiently until the gosling was freed. That was unusual, as Canada geese are normally aggressive around humans, even when they don’t have goslings to protect.  -via Arbroath

High Wire Cat

We’ll never know why a cat decided to climb this tall utility pole, but we know he/she was there long enough for someone to call out the Algerian Civil Defence force. They came with a ladder and safety equipment for a rescue, but the cat was not having any of that.

Hang in there, Baby! Let's just hope that the cat has learned his lesson, and won’t be scaling any more metal structures for a while. -via Metafilter

The Running of the Goats

The Covington Farmers Market in Covington, Kentucky, marked its season opening Saturday by staging The Running of the Goats. The name was meant to evoke images of the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, but organizers assured people on its Facebook event page that the goats would not be running rampant. They would be marching to the market, escorted by handlers.

Are the goats RUNNING through the streets (Bulls of Pamplona style??)
Nope! The goats will walk/trot an organized route through Covington guided by our goat team volunteers and the City of Covington Police Department. You and yours are asked to walk along on the sidewalks. Several local shops will have fun interactions (music, photos) to keep the walk interesting along the way.

No one bothered to explain that to the goats.

(YouTube link)

During the parade, six of the seven goats decided to break out of the pack and run through the town. A mad dash ensued as volunteers and police tried to catch the goats. They eventually rounded them all up by Sunday, after the last two goats spent Saturday night on the run. Organizers say that the incident brought so many people to the park that they plan on doing it again next year, with improved procedures. -via Arbroath
