Cat with a Hole in its Side

Cows with port holes exist in real life, but this cat is an optical illusion. Oh, the cat is real enough, but the round hole in its side is not. It was spotted in the United Arab Emirates, where the sand is the same color as the cat’s calico spots. The black part of the spot creates the illusion of depth. The caption under the photo by Twitter user @hanamomoact translates to “The hole in my stomach is not empty.”

The caption of the video translates to “The version of the videos don't lie to Momma, hungry hole.” That’s a machine translation; if you can read Japanese, I’m sure the original is more eloquent. -via HuffPo

Husky Blows Bubbles in Her Water Bowl

If you're a Siberian Husky, then you do whatever it takes to stay cool in the summer. For Maya, that means blowing bubbles through her nose in her water dish. It's fun, too!

Orangutan Builds a Hammock

(Video Link)

This clever ape at the Twycross Zoo in the UK reasons that if he stretches a cloth between two overhead lines, he can climb in and enjoy a bed. A colleague at Ape Research & Development then discovers that this bed will swing easily with a nudge.

The mechanism becomes unstable and collapses. But this is, after all, just the proof of concept phase. They'll have a working prototype soon enough.

Dog Freaks Out Over Cat-Shaped Balloon

(Video Link)

What sorcery is this?!

It is a cat and, yet, it is also not a cat. The creature hangs in midair, floating above an uncanny valley between living creature and non-living object. The husky investigates.

Newborn Octopuses Are As Strange and Wonderful As You Might Imagine

(Video Link)

Like many people on the internet, we here at Neatorama love octopuses. They are beautiful, intelligent and utterly strange creatures -and now you can see them as newborn babies -and as newborn as they get, considering that the video actually shows them leaving the egg. The life of an octopus isn't easy and most species die shortly after mating, but it's all worth it just to give this next generation a fair start on life.

Why You Should Never Turn Your Back On A Big Cat

Big cats like tigers and cheetahs are popular among the pet collecting crowd, but these apex predators don't change their killer ways no matter how long they're kept in captivity and often turn on their captors.

Which is why Tampa, Florida's Big Cat Rescue felt compelled to create this video showing what happens when you turn your back on a big cat.

(YouTube Link)

It's funny to see the cats come stalking up behing him then act like "what? I'm not doing anything..." when he turns around, but this video wouldn't be so funny without that sturdy fence.

This Star Wars Pug-Crawl is the Cutest Geek Dog Fest Ever

Only in Portland would a pub-crawl involve dressing pugs up as Star Wars characters and parading them down the street -and if that's what it means to keep Portland weird, I'm all in.

The event was well documented on Twitter and Fashionably Geek rounded up a few of the best costumes from the parade, including this amazing Bespin Cloud City pug that was apparently totally cool with being carried on his owner's shoulders all day.

A few owners even got in on the fun, like this Jabba the Hut partnered with his precious Salacious Crumb pup.

Canada's Most Notorious Crow Steals Police Evidence

When Vancouver police shot a man weilding a knife at them, they probably thought the strangest part of the ordeal was over -but that was before a crow flew down and stole the knife from the crime scene. Police had to chase the bird 20 feet before it dropped the knife, only for it to return to the crime scene where it attempted to steal glasses and equipment of a news crew trying to cover the story.

It's believed the crow is the legendary Canuck of Vancouver, as he not only wears the same red identifcaton band, but is famous in the city for exactly this kind of pesty behavoir, as well as taking rides on the city's Sky Train. In fact, he's even stolen knives before as evidenced by the image above (the non-meme version can be found on the bird's Facebook here).

On a side note, Canuck is not the only bird to steal knives as i09 demonstrated back in 2012, which leaves me with a new phobia -being stabbed by a knife dropped by a bird flying above me. It could happen.

Chipmunk Caught Red-Handed

This little chipmunk thought he had stumbled on the perfect treasure trove of food when he found a full bird feeder. Yet he couldn’t shake the feeling he was doing something wrong by taking all those seeds. When confronted by the guy who loaded the feeder, he did the only thing a thief with a conscience would do. He gave it all back.

Cheetah with a GoPro

The folks at the Cincinnati Zoo outfitted Savanna the cheetah (previously at Neatorama) with a GoPro camera on her back. She probably wouldn’t have liked one on her head, and you really can’t force a wild cat to do something they don’t want to. Watching her zoom around the compound with this point of view is terrifying, kind of like riding in the car with your 16-year-old driving.

(YouTube link)

When they go to slow-motion, you really get a sense of how fast they run. I couldn’t even keep up with a cheetah in slow motion! But then again, if a wild predator were chasing me, I might surprise myself. -via Tastefully Offensive

10 Examples of Cat Logic

(Video Link)

Why does your cat refuse to snuggle with you except at the worst possible times? Why does he prefer to use uncomfortable objects as beds instead of, you know, actual cat beds?

Celebrity cats Cole and Marmalade explain with the help of their hapless human, Chris Poole. Cat behavior makes perfect sense once you strip away human dumbth.

Rescued Baby Beavers

A group of hunters saw a female beaver in a trap in Saskatchewan, and knew her babies must be near. They found a litter of four beaver kits, only a couple of days old, and took them to Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation & Education Centre. Medical intervention saved the babies, and they will be raised at the center until they are two years old. See more pictures of the adorable baby beavers at Buzzfeed.

Check out Salthaven’s Facebook page for an amazing variety of animal babies that have been rescued.

Young Chimpanzee Has Fun Sliding down a Hill

(Video Link)

This young bonobo at the Twycross Zoo in the UK has discovered the. Best. Game. Ever! It's called Sliding Down the Hill. To play, climb to the top of the incline in the enclosure, then slide down on your back. Do it forwards or backwards, but backwards is better.

He has fun doing it over and over again and tries to get his parents involved. They're less interested in playing the game. Perhaps, like humans parent, they're just too tired.
