Famous Men And Their Feline Friends, Illustrated

Cats are beloved by both sexes, and yet they’ve become the subject of a cultural misconception that states women are more inclined to own cats than men.

However, everyone knows this is false, and many of the most famous and most macho men in history have had a pet cat they loved like a member of the family.

Brooklyn-based artist Sam Kalda has created some wonderful portraits of famous men hanging out with their cats and collected them all in an MFA book project appropriately entitled Men and Cats: An Illustrated History.

The book is Sam's way of showing that men like cats and cats get along just fine with men, and we don't have to be crazy to be a self described "cat-fancier", we just have to be crazy about cats!

The Funniest Way to Wash Your Dog

It's called the Woof Washer 360. This As Seen on TV product is a clever approach to washing a dog. I want one, but to use on my kids. It would make bath time so much faster!

(Video Link)

The Woof Washer 360 is a perforated garden hose that sprays water from the interior of a circle. You can channel soapy water through it, as well as clean water for rinsing.

One woman in the video says that it's helpful for washing "parts you don't want to touch." Sorry, but I think that's not actually optional, even with this handy tool.

Tree Kangaroo Fostered by Wallaby Mother

We’ve seen plenty of nursing mammals take in orphan babies of a different species, but it’s a totally different story with marsupials. Kangaroos and wallabies are born very underdeveloped, and stay in their mother’s pouch for months while nursing and growing. At the Adelaide Zoo, a Goodfellow’s tree kangaroo died while nursing a joey. Zookeepers transferred the baby to the pouch of a a Yellow-foot rock wallaby, a completely different species. That had never been done before, but the joey, named Makaia, survived and thrived with his surrogate wallaby mother.

Tiny Hamster’s Tiny Barbecue

Tiny Hamster is back and getting ready for the 4th of July celebrations with a tiny barbecue! That means a tiny little cookout with tiny little veggie burgers and vegetable shish-kabob, a pool to cool off in, tiny holiday hats, and a picnic table set for friends (rabbit, guinea pig, and hedgehog).

The critters obviously cared way more about the food than the patriotic occasion, but a good time was had by all. -Thanks, Jake!

Meet Quasi Modo, The New World's Ugliest Dog

After a ruff competition for the World's Ugliest Dog title, a 10-year-old so-strange-looking-he's-actually-cute mutt named Quasi Modo has won.

Quasi Modo has a spinal birth defect that made him hunchbacked (just like his namesake Quasimodo, the protagonist in Victor Hugo's novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame). The dog's owners, veterinarian Virginia Sayre and her husband Mike Carroll in Loxahatchee, Florida, adopted him after he was abandoned at an animal shelter.

"My appearance can be a little unsettling to some (I have had grown men jump on top of their cars to get away from me because they thought I was a hyena or Tasmanian devil) but once they get to know me I win them over with my bubbly personality," Quasi Modo's biography stated.

According to Chief Judge Brian Sobel, Quasi Modo was selected because he "epitomized excellence in ugliness."

Last year, Quasi Modo came in second place in the same competition, which is held annually at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. Here's a video clip showing Quasi Modo at his home at the G & M Ranch in Loxahatchee Groves, Florida:

Great Dane Wants Cuddles

(YouTube link)

Just a couple of days ago, we showed you how Alexander Fredriksen can’t lie on the couch without his cat Nala wanting to snuggle. In this video, Texan Roy Field had the same problem, but his cuddly pet is a Great Dane that’s as big as he is! Bodie Gene just wants to lie down and snuggle with his human like any good lap dog. The pup is only a year old. If Bodie Gene gets any bigger, Roy may be squashed flat! -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Baby Chameleon Doesn't Know That He's Already Hatched from His Egg

(Photo: Canvas Chameleons/Nick Henn)

Nick Henn is the owner of Canvas Chameleons, a chameleon supply company in Reading, Pennsylvania. He recently had a baby panther chameleon hatch out of its egg. The baby was struggling, so Henn cut at its eggshell with little scissors. He found inside the shell this adorable dime-sized ball of chameleon. National Geographic describes the process:

Under Henn's close watch, the panther chameleon eggs grow in their leathery shells for seven to eight months. When the big day arrives, the chameleon uses a special "egg tooth" on its upper jaw to slit the egg's inner membrane, which then contracts.

It's "like a swimmer peeling off a wet bathing suit," says Robin Andrews, a biologist at Virginia Tech.

R.I.P. Tama

Sad news from Japan: Tama the Stationmaster Cat, who supervised the Kishi Station of the Wakayama Electric Railway, has died. She worked at the station since 2007. We featured Tama in 2007, 2008, and 2010. Tama served as a loyal employee of the railroad for eight years, and is credited with revitalizing the station and bringing in tons of money. She passed away Wednesday, June 24th from heart failure. Tama was 16 years old, which would be in the 80s in cat years. See a tribute to Tama in pictures at Atlas Obscura. -Thanks, Eric!

Update 6/28/15: At her Shinto funeral today, Tama was elevated to goddess. She also received a posthumous promotion from the railroad company to "ultrastationmaster."
