Pinocchio the Blind Shelter Cat Met Feline Pal Jiminy Cricket, and All Was Right With Their World

YouTube Link

Pinocchio was found abandoned at an airport as a kitten. Both his eyes were badly infected and they had to be surgically removed. Blind and transferred to a shelter, Pinocchio may have been losing hope, until he met fellow shelter kitten Jiminy Cricket. The two male cats became inseparable and were eventually adopted out together into the beautiful and obviously loving home seen in this video. Now the two cats not only have each other, but they have toys, cardboard boxes and backyard to explore to their hearts' content. Don't miss the adorable shots of Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket together in this uplifting footage.

Cats and Dogs Getting Along Like Cats and Dogs

Cats and dogs can get along together at times, especially if they know each other well. But they’re still different species, and that can cause conflict. Dogs are rambunctious, and cats are pointy on five out of six ends.

Ducklings Rescued from Storm Drain

High school students in Leonia, New Jersey noticed that eight ducklings had fallen into a storm drain. Their anxious and agitated mother stood nearby, unable to help. They summoned the police, who blocked off the flow of water, then reached down into the drain to scoop up the ducklings with a net. North Jersey reports:

To catch the remaining three, Garris said they called in Police Officer Erik Goodell, who at 6’6” and with “very long arms” was a natural for this unique rescue operation. The officers pried open the grate of the adjoining storm drain and used a cardboard box to block the entrance to the tunnel, said Garris.

After doing so, the officers were able to reach down and grab the last three ducklings, said Garris.

The officers then motioned the ducklings toward their mother, who had been hiding in some bushes during all the commotion, said Garris.

Three Bear Cubs Up in a Tree

Photo: Valtteri Mulkahainen

Wildlife photographer Valtteri Mulkahainen snapped this photo of three bear cubs climbing up a tree in Suomussalmi, Finland, while mama bear waited below.

No, the cute cubs aren't playing hide-and-seek with their mom. Rather, they were actually hiding from a male bear that's nearby. Mulkahainen told Ilta-Sanomat that the three cubs climbed up the tree for safety, while the female bear stayed on guard below. The cubs stayed in the tree for quite some time, but the male never showed up.

Historically Accurate Civil War Uniforms for Dogs

(Photo: Dogs of Gettysburg)

Well, technically speaking, dogs on either side usually did not wear regulation uniforms. But if you want your pooch to look like a Union or Confederate soldier with the precision that a Civil War reenactor would appreciate, then Stephanie Honodel can outfit your dog.

Honodel has been making custom pet clothing for 15 years. About 5 years ago, a Civil War reenactor asked her to make a Confederate general’s uniform for his miniature pinscher. Word about her work spread and she’s since made hundreds of Civil War dog costumes. To accommodate her business, she’s just opened a shop called the Dogs of Gettysburg, which is helpfully located near the battlefield site.

If you don’t have a dog, you can still throw your pet back in time. Honodel also makes costumes for cats, pigs, tortoises, and snakes. You can read more about her work at the Huffington Post.

Zoo Basel's Gorilla Troop Welcomes New Baby

For the first time in ten years, a Western Lowland Gorilla has been born at Zoo Basel in Switzerland. On May 19, 26-year-old mom Joas and 16-year-old father M’Tonge welcomed their newborn. The baby, whose sex has yet to be determined, has been cause for excitement in the entire troop of Western Lowland Gorillas at Zoo Basel: Faddama, Quarta, Zungu, and Goma. Like a family, they all embraced the youngster.

As is evident from the video below, mom Joas keeps her baby close and handles it lovingly and gently. Infant gorillas are wholly dependent on their mothers, suckling at least once an hour and sleeping with them in the same nest. Fathers don't take an active role in caring for the young, but they help socialize them to other gorillas and protect them from aggression.

Read more about these fascinating animals and see additional pictures at Zooborns.
