Brand Name Films

The Instagram account Brand Name Films is just what it says on the tin. These are posters for movies that don’t exist, but are based on familiar brands of everyday products. The mashup of product with poster is well-done, but what really grabs my attention are the casting decisions. Yeah, I could believe the Rock as Mr. Clean.

I can also believe Tom Hanks as Orville Redenbacher, because Tom Hanks can play anyone. See the rest of the posters at Instagram. -via Geeks Are Sexy

A Cactus Throne for the Desert King

Mexican designer Valentina Gonzalez Wohlers felt inspired by her own native land and the furniture styles of the Louis XV era to create a pair of pink prickly pear chairs. There are male and female versions available, as well as an ottoman.

These chairs are not quite as dangerous or painful to sit in as the Iron Throne, but are prettier.

Turkey’s Unique Hand Sanitizer

While we get used to washing our hands and using hand sanitizer all the time, we learn that Turks have been doing that for hundreds of years with kolonya.

Meaning “cologne”, kolonya has been a treasured symbol of Turkish hospitality and health since the Ottoman Empire, and it’s often described as Turkey’s national scent. Traditionally, this sweet-scented aroma made with fig blossoms, jasmine, rose or citrus ingredients is sprinkled on guests’ hands as they enter homes, hotels and hospitals; when they finish meals at restaurants; or as they gather for religious services. But unlike other natural scents, this ethanol-based concoction’s high alcohol content can kill more than 80% of germs and act as an effective hand disinfectant.

But kolonya is more than a disinfectant. It’s part of Turkish culture, as a greeting, an aromatic, and the smell of nostalgia for those who grew up with it. Read about kolonya, including how it’s made, at BBC Travel. -via Damn Interesting

How Do You Get To Carnegie Hall?

It’s such an old joke that Carnegie Hall has a page on its website dedicated to it. When you pose the question to real New Yorkers, how they answer depends heavily on how old they are. -via Weird Universe

Concretely, These Gadgets Won't Work But I Want Them

Evidently, the main reason we buy gadgets is to use them and not for display, but this artist shatters that idea with his Concrete Collectibles.

Denver artist Eric Sahs of Concrete Collectibles makes replicas of various objects by molding them, then casting them in concrete. He then finishes them with terra cotta glazes and masonry stains to give them added dimension and depth.

It turns out that the prices for the concrete sculptures range from about $63 up to $400! It's a bit high, but hey! It's art!

Which would you want to buy?

Goodbye, S Voice

Almost 8 years after its initial release on May 30, 2012, Samsung has announced that their very own voice assistant, S Voice will now be bidding farewell on June 1 this year.

Despite this, most Samsung phones will probably not be affected by this news, as the tech giant has already included Bixby, their newer voice assistant which was released in 2017, on newer phones.

… Nonetheless, Samsung wearable users might notice a difference, as the smartwatches Gear S3 and Gear Sport do currently run S Voice.
These smartwatches, however, will receive a software update that will replace S Voice with Bixby once support for S Voice ends.

Doing Business Calls The Right Way

Meeting in person has always been the best way to establish good business relationships with each other, be it with your colleague or your client. But because of the current circumstances, that practice has been put to a halt temporarily. And so we go and do the next best thing, which is phone calls.

Calls are far better ways for you to connect on an interpersonal level. That’s the good news.
The bad news is that we often meander in these sorts of conversations. Chitchatting your way through a call may be the right touch when talking to a friend or family member, but it can lead to a dead end when making a business call.

So, how do we do a business phone call the right way? Judith Humphrey provides us with a four-part template that we can use to make sure we don’t treat our business calls like casual ones.

See the template over at Fast Company.

Play On The Claw Machine For A Free Sanitizer!

An arcade in England decided to put sanitary products in their claw machines instead of the usual toys. Rob Braddick, the owner, swapped out the toys with toilet paper and sanitizers after seeing how fast these products fly off their local store’s shelves. Oddee has the details:

“We also have a large machine that used to have a Spider-Man doll, but now there is a large Curex soap in there and that’s the Rolls-Royce of hand sanitizer,” Braddick said according to Fox News . “We test it, it’s possible to win them but it is hard. We’ve had people coming in to have a go but I don’t think anyone has won yet. It’s been a bit quiet so far but I think people will start coming in to have a look. There are still some toilet rolls on the shelves around here so I guess people aren’t that desperate yet.”
