Betsy Ross' family visited some duck nests in their local park. Unfortunately, someone had vandalized them. But amongst the wreckage was one egg that was intact except for one small crack.
“My kids were very upset about it … [they] found a lone egg with a small crack that wasn’t leaking and asked me to save it.”
“I really didn’t think I had a chance of saving it because I’ve never hatched an egg”
Ross looked up all the information she could, and since she couldn't afford an incubator, she put the egg in her bra to keep it warm. For 35 days. The duck inside continued to grow, and despite some problems, survived! Read the story of the duck and the Mom who wouldn't give up at Bored Panda. With plenty of pictures.
Chris Grady, the Lunarbaboon, has succeeded as a webcomic artist. If you can develop even just one dedicated hater, you've made an impact on the world.
Grady recorded a time-lapse video of himself drawing this cartoon. The creation process is itself interesting--perhaps even more so for whichever sad person seems to hate him.
These are hand-made models of figures playing cards and of gold miners hauling gold nuggets to the surface. BUT the figures are made from crab’s legs and claws… Typical Victorians, they loved weird/creepy stuff. #CreepiestObjectpic.twitter.com/A5NHiPGnVh
The Yorkshire Museum kicked off another museum challenge, and we all get to enjoy the results. Museums were asked what their creepiest object is, and many rushed in to show theirs off. You'll see bad taxidermy, deteriorating toys, hoaxes, things made from body parts, weird art, nature specimens, and even food. See them in the replies to the original Tweet, or you can follow the #CreepiestObject hashtag. -via Mashable
The place you most want to feel safe is in your home. The actual odds of accidents, invaders, ghosts, and other bad luck often have little to do with our sense of security. It's easier to relax when you're convinced you've done something to protect yourself and your family. We've worked out myriad ways of reassuring ourselves of safety over time, including embedding objects in the structure of our houses.
When [Dan] Kolbert was renovating his late-1800s home in Portland, he was midway through the project when he tore open a bedroom wall only to find a small shoe entombed inside. It was a filthy scrap of a thing, brown and smaller than his hand. He was surprised to find it there; Kolbert didn’t know much about the history of the house, and nothing he did know would explain the presence of a lone baby’s shoe. “My house is just two blocks from St. Dom’s, in the heart of what was once the West End Irish community,” he said. “I’ve since learned it was a common good luck charm for Irish immigrants.” He kept the shoe. It’s a curiosity, a strange piece of history. Plus, it had been in the house for hundreds of years. I can’t help but think moving it would be somehow wrong.
Concealed shoes have been found all over America and in homes in the U.K., Ireland, and Europe. Historians believe the practice dates to the early modern period. The Northampton Museum in the U.K. has cataloged nearly 2,000 discoveries of concealed shoes, the majority of which were buried in the walls of homes, but some were also found in churches, barns, and shops.
Joe Exotic was detained and unable to attend such an important photo shoot. Nor was a tiger available. So Wisconsin farmers Kyle Harris and Jeff Kast painted a cow with the stripes and colors of a ferocious tiger. Then the two men donned wigs and clothes appropriate for their roles. We are used to seeing informercials on TV where a former celebrity endorses some product or another. The George Foreman Grill was an outlier in that group, as George Foreman was not exactly a has-been when it launched in 1995. Sure, his biggest victories were in the 1970s, but his comeback in 1994 made him a star all over again. Not long afterward, he became a star in infomercials selling a simple grilling machine.
When the infomercial first hit the air, Foreman was in his mid-40s, fresh off one of the greatest career comebacks in boxing history. He’d won Olympic gold as an amateur in 1968 and gone pro, knocking out Frazier in 1973 to become the heavyweight champion. He was KO’d by Muhammad Ali a year later, and at 28, he retired to become a minister at his own church in Houston. Ten years later, Foreman returned, going on to knock out Michael Moorer, a man nearly 20 years his junior, to reclaim his heavyweight title.
Foreman arrived on our TV sets as a guy who could still go toe-to-toe with anyone, bringing along the promise that there was an easier way to cook healthy and perhaps stay that way. And that one-two punch would spark a cultural shift in how men—or at least this man, and every guy I went to college with—cook and eat.
Because of the current crisis that the world is facing right now, international flights have been cancelled, and many vacation plans have been ruined.
One of the most popular places to visit around the world is the Akihabara area in Tokyo, and now that trips were cancelled, this would most likely make many people disappointed and furious.
This might be a good time, however, to familiarize oneself with the layout of the place, through this papercraft kit from a local company called Niku no Mansei.

The World Photography Organisation has announced recently the winners of their 2020 Sony World Photography Awards Open competition.
The winning photos of various categories can be seen over at BBC. Some are visually pleasing, while others are thought-provoking. But if there’s something in common with these pictures, all of them speak a thousand words.

Now that very few, if not zero, cars can be found on roads across the world (because we’re stuck at home), animals now seem to be taking advantage of the outside world without us humans. In South Africa, for example, a pride of lions were found chilling on the road.
The images show a pride of lions lounging on a road, seemingly unperturbed by the presence of the photographer, park ranger Richard Sowry.
"This lion pride are usually resident on Kempiana Contractual Park, an area Kruger tourists do not see," tweeted Kruger Wednesday. "This afternoon they were lying on the tar road just outside of Orpen Rest Camp."
"Lying on the road during the daytime is unusual because under normal circumstances there would be traffic and that pushes them into the bush," park spokesman Isaac Phaahla told CNN.
A new special edition Xbox One X has been leaked on the Canadian Walmart website. The Cyberpunk 2077 Xbox looks like scrap metal at first, but it comes with glow-in-the-dark graffiti. Somehow the phrase “No Future” on the console seems appropriate, as Kotaku details:
Under normal circumstances, the phrase “No Future” would almost certainly qualify as the sort of bad virtual graffiti that tries to club you over the head with a game’s grim-dark themes. See “What happens when the food runs out?” in The Last of Us or “No one will keep us from death!” in Dishonored. Did you know things are not good in these worlds? Did the zombies, raging pandemics, and crumbling social orders not properly convey that? If not, check out the side of that concrete underpass.
But the year 2020 feels like it asks for something more. Apparently, it demands a a console that brings that obvious, needless graffiti out of the game and into our living rooms. It demands a console that reminds us “No future” even in the dark, even when it’s not on.
French street artist Bragapainted a sphinx cat with such perfect perspective that it blends almost seamlessly into the background. The natural gas tank that serves as his canvas disappears when photographed from the right angle.
As social beings, we humans have our own respective sets of what we call “long-term friends” — friends that we walk, talk, and hang out with over the years. The same can be said with some animals, too. Flamingos, like us humans, have long-term friends.
Flamingos form friendships that last for years and “choose to hang out” with each other, scientists have learned.
A five-year study found the distinctive pink birds, known to be highly sociable as part of a large flock, often prefer to spend time with specific close “friends” within their group.
And they even appear to avoid certain individuals they don’t get on with, according to researchers at the University of Exeter.
I remember the first time I encountered a sprouted potato. As I picked up one of these potatoes, I immediately turned to my sister and asked her what I should do. She then reassured me that these potatoes are safe to eat, provided that I peel the potato and remove the sprouts.
It seems that, back then, my sister’s advice was correct... for most of the time, at least.
The sprouts themselves shouldn't be eaten, as they contain high concentrations of the toxins solanine and chaconine. These toxins, called glycoalkaloids, can cause headaches, vomiting, and digestive issues when consumed in high quantities.

Dr. Rich Novy, a geneticist from the USDA Agricultural Research Service, told Best Food Facts that potatoes that have sprouted are fine to eat in most cases. The biggest chemical change that takes place when a potato sprouts is the conversion of starches to sugars to feed the growing buds. If a potato still feels firm after the sprouts have been removed, it has most of its nutrients and can be salvaged. But if it feels soft and wrinkly, it's gone bad and should be tossed out.
