Farming Tools Made By Women, For Women

(Photo: Green Heron Tools)

When Ann Adams and Liz Brensinger created Green Heron Farms on their property in New Tripoli, Pennsylvania, they promptly experienced a serious problem: many of the farming and gardening tools commonly available were made for men's bodies. In particular, they expected users to have a certain height and weight that Adams and Brensinger didn't have.

So the two launched Green Heron Tools, a company that designs and sells farming tools built with women's bodies in mind. Civil Eats explains why these modified tools are important:

“Before, a shovel was a shovel, with a handle that was usually too tall for me to use with any real dexterity and a blade that often cut into the soles of my shoes over time as I dug,” says Liz.

She adds: “I’ve met people who feel like using a different tool expresses weakness, and I think when I first moved into this field, I felt similarly. It’s an ego thing, [but] not realistic when you look at the science and see the differences in our body structure.”

“The HERShovel has completely changed the way I use this type of tool,” says Danielle Marvit, a former organic grower and herdswoman, who is currently the production manager for Garden Dreams Urban Farm & Nursery in Pittsburgh. “It has been great for my body, and it is the most efficient shovel I have ever used.”

Hypotenuse

This kid can’t make his mind up whether he wants to be Mad max or Immortan Joe. The teacher is no help, and in fact would rather be somewhere else. It doesn’t look like this geometry class is going anywhere. This is the latest from John McNamee at Pie Comic.

The Girl And The Bear - She's A Fairy Tale Felon

Girl And The Bear by Elinakious

Little girls who go wandering through the woods at night should beware of any warm and welcoming domiciles they come across, because there are most likely bears dwelling inside. While they may seem fuzzy and cuddly when you peer through the window at them, especially the little cubs, those bears want nothing to do with destructive humans and their porridge eating ways. But if you're like Goldilocks and can't help but do some breaking and entering while you wander around the forest do yourself a favor and stay awake after you've pilfered all the porridge!

Add a touch of fairy tale wonder to your geeky wardrobe with this Girl And The Bear t-shirt by Elinakious, it's a timeless design with a hidden surprise that's sure to delight.

BB-8 the Car

The Toyota Corolla is surprisingly effective in the sands of Jakku. Even BB-8 has trouble keeping pace.

Redditor dubsallday saw this great car mod inspired by Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. S/he also made a recording of it rolling forward in traffic. You can watch it here (auto-start).

Who does it belong to? You can investigate by following the hashtag printed on the side of the car: #ISpyBB8.

Toys vs Toys

Johnny McHone took advantage of the Vine format to stage battles between toys. This became a series, which has now been assembled into a movie. Characters from just about every TV, movie, comic book, and video game franchise that ever spawned action figures is included.

Power Rangers against Stormtroopers! Hulk Hogan vs. the Predator! Luke Skywalker vs. a dalek! Most of the time, it’s pretty easy to tell the good guys from the bad, until you run into a one-on-one  battles between two characters you’re not all that familiar with. But those sequences are short. There is a time-travel device involved, too, which throws a wrench into the whole plot. A lot of work went into this. -via Digg

Donut Mug Cakes

Do you like to start the day with a cup of coffee and a donut? Kirbie of the food blog Kirbie’s Cravings is most of the way there with her donut mug cakes.

She microwaved cake batter inside mugs, then used a cupcake corer—a clever tool that I had not heard of—to cut out the hole in the donut. She spread a chocolate ganache over the top and added sprinkles to create an almost cartoonish-looking donut. Yummy!

Emilia Clarke Has Lost Her Dragons And Her Spanx

Emilia Clarke clearly enjoys playing Daenerys on the hit HBO show Game of Thrones, and even though she plays one of the most popular characters on the show she hasn't let fame go to her head.

In fact, it seems like she has more of a sense of humor about herself now than when she started on the show, at least according to the goofy pics and vids she posts online.

Her latest hilarious video gem was created for Glamour Magazine, recreating her famous "where are my dragons?" line while looking for her spanx, her wig and her kale chips. It's the mother of all funny celeb videos!

It looks cute from the front, too.

That's What I Call Fruit Cake

I love a great piece of ripe fruit, but I admit, I love cake a little more, which is why this fruit basket looks so amazing to me. That's right -it's all cake. Don't believe me, check out this picture.

These surprising delights were made by Christine McConnell, author of Deceptive Desserts. Each of the cakes inside are different and in all the basket contains lime meringues, caramel apple pies, blueberry lemon hand pies, pear tarts, orange creme cakes and chocolate coated raisin grapes. Well, at least some of them contain real fruits inside.

Man Builds Robot That Looks Like Scarlett Johansson Because He Can

If you're going to build yourself a robot bride then you might as well build one that looks like your favorite movie star Scarlett Johansson instead of, say, one that looks like your dead mother.

And isn't it every young geek's dream to build their own beautiful movie star bot so they don't have to binge watch shows on Netflix alone?

Of course, most sad little fellows don't have fifty thousand dollars laying around, nor do they have the drive to create a robot from scratch despite their lack of mechanical skills.

But amateur bot builder Ricky Ma had the cash and the driving desire to create his very own "famous Hollywood actress", so he learned along the way:

When I started building it, I realised it would involve dynamics, electromechanics and programming. I have never studied programming, how was I supposed to code?

Additionally, I needed to build 3D models for all the parts inside the robot. Also, I had to make sure the robot's external skin and its internal parts could fit together. When you look at everything together, it was really difficult.

As a robot she's fine, but as an actress she's a bit robotic...

The Books of Paperback Paradise are Different

Paperback Paradise is a fairly new Twitter account that purports to sell books, but what they are doing is renaming old elementary and middle school books with titles that reflect the cheesy cover art.

The examples here were chosen because they have SFW text, which is not the case for most of them. See the rest at Twitter. -via Buzzfeed

3 Young Cancer Survivors Recreate Viral Photo

Two years ago, Rheann, 6, Ainsley, 4, and Rylie, 3, were all fighting cancer. Photographers Lora Scantling and Christy Goodger shot them holding and providing each other with emotional support. They inscribed the picture with the sentiment “Sometimes strength comes in knowing that you are not alone.”  This image touched many hearts and went viral across social media.

We have good news: all three girls are in remission. Scantling told the Today show that the trio are doing well:

  • Ainsley continues to be monitored through monthly blood work but remains in remission and is "enjoying the springtime."
  • Rylie gets scans every three months, but continues to get stronger. "She has left the hospital and now enjoys her days in Pre-K, gymnastics, dance and T-ball."
  • Rheann, the oldest of the group, permanently lost her hair from dozens of rounds of radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Her eyes also droop slightly because of where her brain tumor was located. "The good news is she is a happy 8-year-old with an active life. She loves to ride her bike, hang out with her school friends, and she loves to play with her sisters," Scantling said.

Scantling photographed all of the girls again, this time holding a copy of that famous image.

38 Facts about the Internet

(YouTube link)

Sure, you use the internet every day, but how much do you really know about it? In this episode of the mental_floss List Show, we’ll learn some about its origins, what people have thought or said about it, and more. Yeah, some of it you already know, but the weirder facts might be new to you, and you’ll be glad you learned them. But if wi-fi doesn’t stand for “wireless fidelity,” how can they then claim that it was a take on hi-fi, which stands for “high fidelity”? Something doesn't add up there.

E 1999 Eternal - Keep It Thuggish Ruggish

E 1999 Eternal by Patrick Towers Art

They were the most thuggish and ruggish rap group in all the land, led down the path of gangsta rap greatness by a guy who called himself Eazy, but the E was taken away from the Eternal too soon and the Bone family was left without a patriarch. They tried to keep it together after Eazy's passing, but the spirit of the streets had been replaced by gospel and pop hooks and the group no longer agreed on much of anything. Bizzy was always sitting around the studio stoned out of his mind while Layzie and Krayzie did all the work, leaving Wish alone in the corner wishing he and Flesh could just head down to the crossroads for an ice cream sundae...

Keep your geeky wardrobe classic with this E 1999 Eternal t-shirt by Patrick Towers Art, it's the thuggish ruggish way to show some love for your favorite fast talking rappers!

The Ol' Ketchup through the Straw Prank

(Image: unknown)

Oh, yeah, I am definitely doing this to my wife the next time we go to Whataburger!

This is the first time that I've heard of this prank, but it's been recorded for YouTube at least a few times. Sometimes people use hot sauce instead of ketchup, which is an even better choice.
