It's cold outside! How long can you stay out there before you need to worry about frostbite? Pooja Gandhi and Adam Crahen used data from the National Weather Service to construct an interactive chart that combines air temperature and wind speed to calculate the time it takes to develop frostbite. Hover over the chart to bring up the information for a temperature. The news is not that bad- if the thermometer says the temperature is 0 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind isn't blowing much, it would take you three hours to suffer from frostbite. However, if you're skiing or having other fun in the snow, three hours can go by quickly. Or the wind could pick up. This is why your mother wants to you wear a hat, an extra pair of socks, and keep your gloves dry. Check out the chart at Tableau Public. -via Mental Floss
What's worse than being rejected in favor of a pet? Being rejected in favor of someone else's pet! Yes, it's true that dogs won't break your heart the way a person will. The internet allows us to enjoy relationships from afar. Even relationships that are unrequited, and with a dog. Dogs on the internet come with a bonus in that you don't have to feed, walk, or entertain them. Just like internet boyfriends. This is the latest comic from Chris Hallbeck at Maximumble.
Millennials don't want to be lumped into a group. And they don't want to be labeled -or do they? These folks don't hesitate to tell you how they are special and different, and they'll take a label as long as they get to choose it -and as long as it isn't Millennial.
Not wanting to be seen as a Millennial is the most Millennial thing there is. I can't really blame them. No one wants to be seen as a generalized type, especially when they are exactly that type. Generations weren't quite labeled and pigeonholed so much when we Boomers were young and lumped together. -via Tastefully Offensive
Humanity has dreamed of exploring the cosmos for centuries, but once we realized those dreams were still centuries away we created devices like the Voyager probe to bring the citizens of the cosmos to us.
As far as we know these devices never succeeded in bringing extraterrestrial life to Earth, but we have no idea how many beings, planets or spacecraft those satellites came in contact with over the years.
Nor do we have a clue what the world will look like when these probes return to Earth hundreds of years after being launched into space...
Voyager is a fun and fantastic looking animated short written and directed by Loïc Magar and Roman Veiga that imagines what the world might look like if the Voyager space probe ever returns to Earth. Two words- not pretty.
There was a time when politicians did not want to appear on TV outside of the news. it wasn't dignified. Things have changed. Three candidates from the last presidential election hosted Saturday Night Live, and President Obama appeared on the web series Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis. Our current president once hosted his own reality TV show, among other entertainment projects. We can trace the crack in the custom back 50 years, to the 1968 season premiere of the sketch comedy show Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. I will never forget the entire family's jaws dropping when we saw presidential candidate and former vice-president Richard Nixon say "Sock it to me?" in a clip of barely two seconds.
Laugh-In writer Paul Keyes, a fervent Nixon supporter and media adviser, convinced the candidate to make the brief cameo while campaigning in Los Angeles. At first, Keyes suggested Nixon could make a reference to the show’s catchphrase “you bet your sweet bippy,” but the candidate wasn’t having any of it.
According to television historian Hal Erickson, Nixon told his advisers that he didn’t know what ‘bippy’ meant, and didn’t want to find out. They settled on “sock it to me,” but producer George Schlatter recalled that it took six takes for Nixon to make it through the phrase without sounding angry or offended. Schlatter remembered running out of the studio with the Nixon cameo footage, fearful that the candidate would change his mind or that his campaign team would try to stop him, but television history had been made.

Gavin Free, one of the Slow Mo Guys has an 85-inch TV in his house! That implies that he has a large TV room, and from there you can imagine how well viral videos pay. Anyway, he and Dan are going to show us how television sets work, using different kinds of TVs and their mega-fast cameras so we can see thousands of frames for every video frame on the television device, whether its the big LCD set, a CRT, or an iPhone.
You're not hallucinating- Gav and Dan borrowed a camera to film at 380,000 frames per second to make this video. Oh yeah, it turns out that the TV was given to him for this project. Nice perks with that job! -via Geeks Are Sexy
Post-apocalyptic themes abound in the world of fan art, which makes it hard to find artists who present an original view of the world after the fall of human civilization.
But when an artist with a fresh artistic vision comes along and presents us with a new look at that grim near future world it's instantly obvious the artist is showing us the apocalypse like we've never seen it before.
Digital artist Rostislav Zagornov is one of those visionary artists with an eye on the dark future, and he creates cool concept art showing glimpses of a post-apocalyptic world that feels familiar yet fresh, an odd and broken world that is unmistakably our own.

When having sex in the home has lost its thrill and couples are looking for ways to spice up their sex life they come up with some pretty wacky ideas about where to "do it", especially when alcohol is involved.
“The candy stockroom at Blockbuster Video.” - Jess, 39
“In tube slide at a playground.” - Katie, 23
“An elevator; lots of going down.” - Alisson, 33
“A men’s bathroom at Disney World.” - Johnny, 33
“In the basement of a convent.” - Ben, 45
These bored couples are out looking for new ways to heighten the experience, which almost always leads to having sex in strange and dangerous places, and as long as they don't get arrested that one crazy time usually does the trick.

“Straddling the driver, New Jersey Turnpike.” - Monica, 37
"In the woods. Mosquitos covered everything." - Carol, 24
But when somewhat risky isn't sexy enough bored couples keep upping the ante until the stakes are so high regular sex will forever pale in comparison. So where do they go from there? I hope I never find out!

A notice of a public hearing in Hempstead, New York, is impossible to read. Don't even try it, you might hurt yourself. It's not just a design gone wrong. This is an example of malicious compliance, or following the letter of the law while undermining the spirit of the law, like the "small print" on a contract that gets smaller every year. Yes, they were required by law to post the notice of a public hearing, but you can tell they really don't want anyone to attend. The font is exactly as tall as required, but so narrow as to resemble a barcode more than text. If you really want to read the sign, here is a stretched version. -via reddit
The geek entertainment blog io9 is celebrating its tenth anniversary in many ways, but the one you're most interested in is its list of The 100 Most Important Pop Culture Moments of the Last 10 Years. The list is split into five parts, and the top twenty is finally here. It covers movies, TV, video games, comics, and the fandoms they spawned. Star Wars takes four (and a half) of the spots, but there's plenty of other events to remember. Here's a sample.
19) Deadpool proves not all superhero movies have to be the sameAs superhero fare has dominated the Hollywood ecosystem, one of the biggest criticisms of the genre has been its reliance on the same formula. Deadpool didn’t give a damn about any of that. We didn’t see Wade Wilson struggle to accept the changes that happened to his body or grapple with the right thing to do with his powers. The Merc with a Mouth loves being a randy, potty-mouthed engine of destruction and, in turn, audiences loved the unpredictable meta-aware romp that Ryan Reynolds, Tim Miller, and crew delivered in 2016. It felt like a movie that did whatever the hell it wanted and that R-rated energy propelled Deadpool to become one of the biggest superhero successes of all time.

Law & Order: SVU is now in its 19th season, which puts it in contention for some kind of record. It has 421 episodes ...so far. That kind of run for a police procedural requires a never-ending supply of journeyman actors to play suspects, victims, and lawyers. Over the years, many of those actors have gone on to star in their own TV series or movies, so it's fun to look back at the time they were on SVU. If you watch the shows in reruns years after their first airing, these stars might be completely unrecognizable, especially since many of them were children in the show. Oh, you remember Robin Williams and Carol Burnett, but Serena Williams? Check out all 43 Celebs You Totally Forgot Appeared On Law & Order: SVU at Buzzfeed.
It's been taken for granted that Mormons don't drink coffee, tea, or any soda pop containing caffeine. Or do they? Of course, not all Mormons follow the rules all the time, but what are the rules, exactly? The restrictions in diet came from founder Joseph Smith himself, who received a revelation from God in 1833. The Words of Wisdom explained what was to be eaten and drunk.
But there was one contentious line in the Word that continues to inspire debate. “Hot drinks,” Smith wrote, “are not for the body or belly.” This appears to refer to tea and coffee, both popular beverages in 1830s America. Some modern Mormon scholars have argued that this is because these drinks are often served at near-boiling temperatures, causing a detrimental effect to both the body and the teeth. But others wonder if “hot” refers instead to the caffeine in tea or coffee, citing an 1828 Webster’s definition of “hot” that gives “stimulating” as one of its meanings.
That leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Would decaf coffee be considered a "hot drink"? Hot cocoa? Then Coca-Cola was invented years later -it's not served hot at all, but it did contain a small amount of cocaine at the time. And when the cocaine was gone, the caffeine remained. The disagreements about what drinks are prohibited continued over the years, and led to the story of the secret vending machine that held ice-cold bottles of Coca-Cola and other soft drinks at BYU, which you can read at Atlas Obscura.
Winter weather means you sometimes just have to stay at home inside the house. WCCB in Charlotte, North Carolina, talked to one delightful lady who has the right idea about it.
That's living, eating soups and bread and desserts... there is an upside to bad weather in winter! I bet she makes good soup. And she will soon be a viral star. -via reddit
