Will Giraffe Milk Become The Latest Fad Superfood?

(Image Link)

It seems like a new superfood is announced every other week, and that word "superfood" rolls off the tongue so smoothly people can't wait to share what they've read about the latest "superfood".

Say it a few times to yourself, see how fun it is to say because it makes your mouth form the "ooo" shape? You know who else has lips that can easily form the "ooo" shape?

(Image Link)

The tall and lanky giraffe, that's who, and while they're pretty super as far as animals go they're not considered a superfood, not even by the lions and hyenas who occasionally dine on them.

On the other hand, their milk may be sold as a superfood in the future because, according to this zoological report from 1962, it's better for us than cow's milk:

The report revealed that giraffe milk has a high fat content – 12.5%, to be precise. That compares with 3.5% in full fat cow’s milk (semi-skimmed has 1.5% – 1.8%, skimmed milk has less than 0.3% fat content).

In addition, giraffe milk contains similar amounts of riboflavin, thiamine and vitamin B6 to cow’s milk, but it has higher levels of vitamins B12 and A.

It's unlikely giraffe milk will make it into your local supermarket's dairy aisle anytime soon, even if only because giraffes won't just stand around and let humans milk them like cows.

But it is interesting to think about the odd food products that'll become normalized in the future, and how food fads drive people to eat the strangest stuff!

KFC Beijing is Introducing Facial Recognition Ordering

Are you afraid of future technologies using facial recognition software to track your every movement and action? Then you might want to avoid visiting a KFC in Beijing, where you the company has started to employ facial-recognition software to decide what you want to order. It's not as scary as it sounds though, the restaurant isn't really using full facial recognition. Instead, the software will identify the visitor's age and sex, as well as other factors like the weather and time of day to estimate what that customer will want to order. For example, a male customer in his 20s ordering in the afternoon on a warm day might want a popcorn chicken combo, while an older female in her 40s ordering in on a chilly morning want poridge (which they sell in Beijing).

Of course, that doesn't mean the technology won't help push forward the scary kind of facial recognition, so it might be best to avoid anyway.

New York Now Offers An All Cookie Dough Restaurant

Raw cookie dough is delicious, but the raw eggs can be dangerous and even leaves people in the hospital due to salmonella. Fortunately for cookie dough lovers, Kristen Tomlan has opened a restaurant named DO with specialized cookie dough that has pasturized egg products and heat-treated flour so it is completely safe to eat in large quantities. You can customize your dough, make your own baked cookie creations and the restaurant will even sell you an ice cream cone topped with a scoop of cookie dough.

We're Not Worthy of This Giant Grilled Cheese Sandwich

The problem with grilled cheese is that it limits you to the size of the bread and sure there are some relatively large sour doughs out there, but a classic grilled cheese is all about the white bread. Of course, if you make your own bread then the size is the limit.

(Video Link)

The geniuses over at HellthyJunkFood did precisely that and the finished project, which took 20 slices of cheese to finish, is a true 3,650 calorie, comfort food masterpiece.

The Top Five Garlic Tips, Tested

Garlic is the king of all flavoring agents and condiments in many kitchens, and although garlic is nearly impossible to work into sweet recipes it works well in damn near every savory recipe ever created.

But many people avoid using fresh garlic because it's a pain to peel, too sticky and stinky to chop or crush, and hard to properly roast, and their dishes are left devoid of that great garlic flavor.

Luckily, there are simple solutions to all of these garlic problems- microwaving garlic cloves for about fifteen seconds will make peeling a snap, or you can just seal the cloves in a jar and shake vigorously until the skin falls away.

Roasted garlic is a delicious addition to salads, guacamole and other dips, or when spread on a piece of toast, but the roasting process can take about an hour which may be too long when you're making dinner.

So rather than waiting around for an hour throw the unpeeled garlic cloves in a cast iron skillet over medium heat, turning occasionally until they're cooked evenly on all sides.

Chicken and Waffle Donut Holes

Chicken and waffles are the marriage of two perfect foods, but eating the two together in one big bite requires the use of those pesky old utensils. Now Oh Bite It has come up with a fantastic and dippable one-handed version that combines chicken and waffles with good old fashioned fried donut holes. Essentially they are simply waffle batter stuffed with chicken pieces and deep fried, but the combination of these meant-to-be foods is just too perfect to be ignored. Whether you dip them in hot sauce or syrup is up to you.

These Donuts Are Inspired By Gourmet Diner Entrees

We've heard of donuts with bacon, but taking an ordinary restaurant meal and turning it into a donut is a whole new level of dessert. That's exactly what New York donut shop The Doughnut Project (previously featured on Neatorama for its bone marrow donut) is doing with the favorite restaurant dishes of its founders, Troy Neal and Leslie Polizzotto.

Their new creations include one with grilled Nueske's bacon on a peanut butter glaze with a jalapeño jelly filling, based on this dish from Chef Ryan Bartlow's Quality Eats (top); a kabocha squash filled doughnut with a grilled green grape glaze with a fried caper topping inspired by this dish at Chef Michael Anthony's Gramercy Tavern (above); and a pasta-like donut with tomato jam filling, olive oil glaze and pecorino cheese with a guanciale topping that is a nod to the Bucatini All'Amatriciana at Chef Robert Zwirz's Lupa (below).

Lupa's co-owner, Mario Batali, was so touched by the tribute that he plans on offering a mini version of the donut on the restaurant's dessert menu.

The Official Hostess Power Rankings

Lucas Peterson at Lucky Peach made us all a graph that sorts Hostess snacks by not only taste, but by how easily each one's name can be given to a pet. As someone who named a cat Marshmallow*, I heartily approve. -via Digg

This Kitchen Tool Turns Radishes Into Mario Power-Up Mushrooms

Mario eats mushrooms that look way too brightly colored to be safe, and the red and white ones are clearly inspired by fly amanita mushrooms, which can be toxic if not ingested properly.

But Mario has all the extra lives he could ever need, which make it okay for him to ingest potentially toxic substances, so what are humans with one life left supposed to eat instead of toxic mushrooms?

How about radishes that are sliced to look just like power up mushrooms from the Marioverse?

This fun kitchen gadget created by Israeli industrial designer Avichai Tadmor is called the Ravanello, and it turns ordinary radishes into fun mushroom shapes in just a few simple steps.

The Ravanello won't actually imbue radishes with the power-up abilities of a Mario mushroom, nor will it make people who can't stand radishes suddenly change their minds, but it does make some adorable food art!

North Koreans Try American BBQ

Digitalsoju TV took some people who escaped from North Korea years ago to one of the best barbecue restaurants in South Korea. They also recruited a master barbecue chef and flew in a variety of American barbecue sauces. The people who were trying all these cuts of meat and sauces for the first time were quite impressed (as I'm sure anyone would be).

(YouTube link)

But the food is mainly a starting point for a discussion about the difference between North Korea and the rest of the world. They tell us about the food, the farms, and the customs they grew up with, and especially the North Korean government that takes everything from the people to feed the administration and military. It's all in Korean with subtitles, but well worth the watch. -via reddit, where two of the video producers answer questions.

Warning: if you watch this, you will end up hungry.

Turn Your Old Fruit Into Wine and Beer With This Nearly-Magical Device

If you buy a lot of fresh fruit, you probably see it go bad here and there. Now you can do better than lemonade out of lemons by making wine or cider out of your old fruit. Supposedly you can even turn the fruit into mead -though obviously that requires more honey than it does fruit. The Alchema device is currently available for pre-order and while it's a pretty penny at $429, that could be a bargain for people who drink a lot of craft brews and end up tossing a lot of fruit. Best of all, you won't be wasting food anymore.

Awful Sounding Sandwiches From TV Shows Built And Tested

TV shows are always coming up with crazy food inventions no person would ever eat in real life, or at least wouldn't have eaten before the internet turned making and eating food monstrosities into a great blog post.

The Tang-wich and Toothpaste Sandwich from Married With Children, the Take Me Out To The Burger burger from Bob's Burgers, and the classic Super Shaggy Sandwich from Scooby Doo all seem too ridiculous to make and eat in real life.

But Cracked's Loryn Stone proved she has an appetite for ridiculousness when she made these sandwiches, along with the Twinkie Wiener Sandwich from UHF and the El Burdigato Supreme from Teen Titans GO!, then taste tested every one of them.

The results were surprising with some (Loryn loved the Take Me Out To The Burger burger with Cracker Jack and peanuts) and not surprising at all with others (The Super Shaggy has sardines, marshmallows and fudge in it, so Loryn naturally found it to be inedible).

And in the end Loryn sacrificed her stomach to show us why these sandwiches don't belong in the real world.

Finally You Can Have Your Poop Emoji and Eat it Too

The poop emoji has been a runaway success over the last few years, but for those who wish they could just take a big bite out of it, you can finally get your wish. This crappy dessert was created by Rancho Santa Margarita's The Doughnut Parlor. It's a chocolate cake donut with dark chocolate icing, covered in a spiral of chocolate buttercream and acccessorised with edible candy eyeballs.

While some people might have a hard time biting down on poop, the emoji donut has surprisingly become their biggest seller since it was released.
