The E.T.-Yoda Theory

Star Wars fans are familiar with this, but it may be new to younger folks. We don’t know who put these pictures together, but they surfaced recently at reddit. Adding to the confusion, there is the idea that, although the events happened long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away, the Star Wars saga was a documentary. The images just took a long time to travel to Earth. E.T. was stranded on Earth 32 years ago, which means the enterprising young alien is probably a senator somewhere himself now.

The ET/Yoda question itself was posed years ago, at least as far back as 2006, but it may be much older. The crossovers were actually an agreement between George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, ya know, cross-promotion. Also note that Senator Grebleips was named for Spielberg -just read it backwards. -via Buzzfeed

The Muppets Take Selfies

Everybody loves to take selfies these days, so they keep their smartphone in hand wherever they go so they don’t miss an opportunity.

The Muppets are no different, they love a good selfie and since their new movie Muppets Most Wanted is coming out soon it's the perfect time to get their fleece covered faces out there again via Instagram.

Rizzo's smartphone must be as big, or bigger, than his whole body- how does he carry that thing around with him?

Back to the Future Day!

It’s here! We’ve finally reached the day that Marty McFly traveled forward in time to in the movie Back to the Future Part II. Now where's my hoverboard?

Actually, every day is Back to the Future Day with this handy generator. You can save today’s date, or program any date from January 2012 to December 2015 into it and get a photo. That could be fun for, say, party invitations. And any time you go to the generator site, Back to the Future Day will always be today. Now you know how people trolling their friends about the date do it. The date in the movie is really October 21, 2015.  -via Cynical C

Mashup Of Hitchcock's Original Psycho And Van Sant's Remake

(Video Link)

Psycho changed the way audiences saw movies back in 1960, which is exactly what Hitchcock was going for according to the recent biopic, but that same kind of revolutionary response proved to be too much for Gus Van Sant to hope for with his 1998 remake.

But what happens when the two films are combined, classic and panned remake coming together in a surreal feature-length mashup? Steven Soderbergh decided to address that question with his hybrid horrorfest called Psychos, which you can watch here.

Soderbergh's version bounces between the two films, with the occasional superimposed stacking of the two for artistic appeal, and he posted it to his site Extension 765 with the explanation “This post comes from a place of ‘total affection, openness, and honey bought directly from a beekeeper.’”

Timeholes

(vimeo link)

Filmmaker Ben Mallaby takes us to the year 2015 in a video that looks at the breakthrough of time travel in a more realistic manner than most science fiction tales. The lofty promise of a new technology is often supplanted by less noble uses when such technology becomes available to the general public. Remember when these newfangled computers, and later the internet, were going to be used to facilitate scientific research, global communication, and education? And now it’s full of selfies and cat videos. Do you think the development of time travel will be any different? -via Boing Boing

Animated Short - Batman Versus The Terminator

(Video Link)

With all the comic book crossovers that have occurred, many of which have involved Batman or one of his extended Bat-family, it’s hard to believe that SkyNet never sent a killer android to Gotham City. Batman squared off against the Predator, and the Xenomorphs from Aliens, but never faced the Terminator in combat- until now.

Animators Tony Guerrero and Mitchell Hammond have brought our bat shaped crossover dreams to life with this slick looking short appropriately entitled “Batman versus The Terminator”.

The style is suitably dark and gothic, and the character designs are so cool Batfans will be pleasantly surprised by what they were able to accomplish in a five minute long film.

The 12 Best Batman Encounters

I love the Batman mythos, but it's impossible to keep up with every Batman movie, comic book issue and TV episode that's produced. Thankfully, there are a few great works that Adam A. Donaldson of Nerd Bastards has helpfully rounded up.

I've found that animated Batman is consistently better than the live-action movies, which are often overwrought and designed around stunts and special effects rather than good stories. #10 on Adam's list is a great choice: the episode "Epilogue" from Justice League Unlimited. It's the finale for that show, as well as Batman Beyond and pretty much the DC Animated Universe. Its 24 minutes of outstanding storytelling tells us a lot about both Bruce Wayne and his successor.

Another great choice is #7 on Adam's list: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. This 1993 feature film is, in my opinion, the best Batman movie ever shown in theaters. It's partially an origin story, but it goes beyond that. Mask of the Phantasm features a cleverly-written script, great animation and a fine soundtrack.

You can find the rest of Adam's list here.

Geordi LaForge Is Popular with the Ladies

On Star Trek: The Next Generation, Geordi LaForge was notoriously awkward with women. Oh, working with them was fine. But if he tried to make a move, he’d dematerialize into a puddle of anxiety. His attempts at romance could be charitably described as clumsy (not that I’m one to talk).

Well, that’s old Geordi. Maybe he took the advice of Worf, the resident love doctor on the Enterprise. But I think this photo by Victoria McNally reveals how Geordi became successful. He’s not self-conscious and pleading. He just hangs back, confidently, and lets the Sailor Scouts come to him. Atta boy, Geordi.

The True Story Of Flappy Bird

(Video Link)

Have you ever found yourself wondering what caused that strange little bird to fly off his comfy tree branch and flap his way in-between a bunch of pipes brought straight from Mario's world? Does the lack of a Flappy Bird backstory haunt your dreams?

Don't give it a second thought, watch this animated explanation created by Kud and get to know how Flappy Bird began. By the end of the short you'll feel Flappy's pain, and you'll never want to push his buttons ever again.

I know why the badly drawn bird flaps, it flaps for thee...

Fun Cosplay Videos From Katsucon 2014

(Video Link)

(Video Link)

Katsucon 2014 is a fandom convention that started out being primarily about anime and has blown up to encompass all aspects of pop culture, primarily anime and video games.

Katsucon recently took place in National Harbor, Maryland and we’ve got the videos to prove it. These high quality overview videos were created by YouTuber beatdownboogie, and they showcase some of the best cosplayers in attendance, and generally make free range geeks look all dramatic and cinematic to a slick soundtrack.

Of particular note are the Iron Man Mystery Machine, the spot on Nights Into Dreams costume and the awesome little Doctor Who kid driving around in a K-9 mobile.
