Animated Shorts At The 2014 Academy Awards

(Video Link)

(Video Link)

Frozen won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the 2014 Academy Awards, which came as no surprise, but in the category of Best Animated Short the victor, which seemed to blow people’s minds, was a quirky short called Mr. Hublot.

Mr. Hublot ran up against Get A Horse!, a new Mickey Mouse cartoon drawn in the old noodle limbed style of the original Steamboat Willie cartoons; Feral, which was lauded and applauded by the animation community as a whole leading up to the awards ceremony; Room on a Broom, which is an adaptation of the children's book with the same name; and Possessions by Shuhei Morita, which is his first Academy Award nomination and part of the Short Peace film omnibus.

If you enjoyed Mr. Hublot you can check out some concept art and an interview with the creators Laurent Witz and Alexandre Espigares here.

Simpsons Couch Gag By Sylvain Chomet

(Video Link)

The Simpsons couch gag intro has been recreated, interpreted and totally transformed by many of the greatest animators in the world, including Bill Plympton, John Kricfalusi, and the crew from Robot Chicken, and now Sylvain Chomet has applied his signature style to the gag for an upcoming episode.

Sylvain is best known as the director of The Triplets of Belleville and The Illusionist, and when Matt Groening asked him to create a couch gag sequence for an episode which will air on March 9th he jumped at the chance to do The Simpsons his way.

Sylvain’s incredibly unique style may make the animation on The Simpsons look pretty crappy in comparison, but nobody watches The Simpsons to be wowed by the art style, right?

A True Detective Fan Site Worthy Of The Show

The new hit show True Detective features stellar performances by Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey and a gritty noir inspired storyline, but what the show doesn't have is a website that makes fans wanna yell "alright alright alright!"- until now.

A fan site created by Nigel Evan Dennis recently launched called We Keep The Other Bad Men From The Door, and this fun "updated graphic tribute to HBO's True Detective" is full of information on the characters, clues and a detailed map of Louisiana showing where the events in each episode take place, among other things True Detective.

But be forewarned- the site contains spoilers, so if you aren't caught up on the show you might not want to visit the site just yet.

33 Simpsons Impressions In Five Minutes

(Video Link)

The Simpsons stars a cast of extremely talented voice over actors, including the amazing Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer who voice many of the signature characters, but if they somehow lost the entire cast yet decided the show must go on they could hire Brock Baker and they wouldn’t miss a beat.

Brock is an impressionist who does a Marge that sounds more like Patty and Selma, thinks the Critic is actually part of The Simpsons, and notices that his impression of Moe sounds like Gilbert Godfried while it's tumbling out of his mouth.

Okay, so maybe the Simpsons wouldn’t be able to survive with Brock alone to do the voices, but for a guy who sits around his house doing impressions and making YouTube videos all day he’s pretty good!

Geordi La Forge Visor Ring

Your relationship and your warp drive are fully operational with this ring by Etsy seller Joel Wagner. It’s shaped like the VISOR (yes, all capital letters) worn by Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation. It’s sterling silver, made with 3D printing technology and can process light in the infrared and ultraviolet ranges.

Wagner, being a modern artist and businessman, accepts Bitcoin for payment. But why not gold-pressed latinum?

You Never Think You're Going to Be the Type of Space Captain to Throw Someone Out the Airlock

(Image: Battlestar Galactica/Sci-Fi Channel)

At McSweeney's, Captain Ariel Karlin writes of her great dilemma. We all grow up with images of space captains sending their enemies out airlocks in quick but bloody deaths. But we never expect to end up doing exactly what they did:

Listen, I know how this looks. I always said I wasn’t going to be “that guy.” Just because I have an airlock doesn’t mean I have to throw anyone out the airlock. And yes, at this point, it’s pretty overdone. But seriously, please step through the first airtight door.

It probably seems like every jackass with a spaceship is constantly throwing someone or other into space. And I don’t necessarily think of myself as the type of person who does things just because I have a certain role and I’ve seen representations of other people in that role behave a certain way. I hope you don’t think I’m that type of person either. Now take five steps forward so you’re in the center of the pressure vessel passageway.

Don’t look at me like that. This is hard for me, too! It’s a kick in the gut when you realize that the person you are as an adult doesn’t match up with who you thought you’d grow up to be. I thought a lot of things about my life would be different. I thought I’d be married by now. I thought I’d still be on Earth. I thought we were many years away from perfecting humanoid cybernetic organisms who could successfully challenge the authority of humankind. And I just never really saw myself as the type of guy who’d let anyone be ripped out of his spaceship into the vast unknown darkness.

It's okay, Captain. You're doing the right thing. The rest of us are completely loyal and will back you up.

Where Star Trek Got Its Federation Symbol

These shapes certainly look familiar to Star Trek fans, and even the Shat. This is a picture of sand dunes on the surface of Mars, in an image taken by the HiRISE camera on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Technically, they’re called barchan dunes. They can form when the wind blows predominantly from one direction. If there’s an obstacle, like a big rock or small hill, the wind will blow around the obstacle, the same way water flows around a rock. Sand will pile up on the leading edge and also be swept around to the backside. Eddies in the wind create circular currents on the downwind side, building up walls of sand on the sides and creating that horseshoe crab-like appearance.

Phil Plait explains more about barchan dunes at Bad Astronomy.

The Life of Alfred

In the late 1960s and early ‘70s, I did not miss a Batman comic (Superman, either), and even if I didn’t part with the 15 cents to take one home, I read them all through at the supermarket while mom shopped.

But since then, a lot has changed in the DC universe, and I read this comic from the top, hoping to catch some insight into Bruce Wayne and company that I should know. By the time I got to the bottom, it became clear that some things never change. Comic by Julia Lepetit and Andrew Bridgman at Dorkly.

Godzilla is Pretty Cool, Except When He's Hungry

AT-AT Rocker

We've told you about the awesome AT-AT rocker that our multi-talented pal Jen Yates of EPBOT and Cake Wrecks in our big The Best Geek-Themed Baby Nurseries and Nursery Decorations post over at Homes & Hues, but the completion of this epic project warrants another look here.

Jen has finished painting the AT-AT rocker, and the result is awesome! The rocker looks like it's ready for the Battle of Hoth.

Jen said:

We added a seat back and extra sturdy T-bar handle for safety, plus some extra-long bumpers on the bottom rails to prevent the rocker from rocking too far.

The rail bumpers might not be necessary for an older and/or more adventurous child, but our 4-year-old test subject Isaiah was afraid of rocking backward, so the stops helped him feel more secure. The bumpers are glued on with construction adhesive, so they're quite strong, but in the future they can be popped off with a hammer.

And if you're salivating for the build pics, Jen won't disappoint you:

The Worf of Starfleet

(YouTube link)

Just what we needed: A parody of the trailer for The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Star Trek character and everyone’s favorite Klingon, Worf! Worf shows all his manliness (and Klingon-ness), his stoicism, his badassery, and his partying side all at once. It just goes to show that Worf should have his own movie, don’t you think? I’d go to the theater for that one. -via Tastefully Offensive
