The Infamous Atari E.T. Landfill Will Be Unearthed By Microsoft

Most gamers have heard the legend of the New Mexico landfill where Atari supposedly buried thousands of unsold copies of the E.T. video game for the Atari 2600 console.

Apparently they were so embarrassed by the release, and its poor sales, that they took every remaining copy and buried them in a landfill in Alamogordo hoping they’d never again see the light of day.

The facts behind the “coverup” were never fully revealed, but come April 26, 2014 the truth will be told when Microsoft and Fuel Entertainment dig up whatever lies beneath the dirt in that Alamogordo landfill, and they want people to come and watch them dig up a piece of video game history.

Will they find thousands of unopened copies of E.T., or something far more sinister? Stay tuned and find out!

To Fix the Star Trek Plot Hole, Just, Um, Reverse the Polarity or Something

Or maybe channel power through the main deflector dish while routing the tachyons through the inertial dampers?

Jeremy Kaye writes, "Sometimes Star Trek is amazing. Other times though." Well, yes. The technobabble could be a bit much at times. But I think that anti-fans emphasize this point excessively. The Next Generation provided a steady diet of quality science fiction for 7 years. You can't have Darmok or The Inner Light every week.

Using Drones to Make a Flying X-Wing from Star Wars

We all want to be Luke Skywalker on the trench run in an X-wing starfighter. With each passing day, we're getting closer to making that dream a reality. Rodger Cleye made this 5-foot long model as a part of that ongoing effort.

It's made of PVC pipe which is why it looks hollow. That was necessary because anything more would have been too heavy for the 3 drone motors that make it airworthy. Check it out in action:

Massive Excavator Turned Into A Transformer

(Video Link)

(Video Link)

Kids who grew up with a healthy love of robots, particularly the Transformers, most likely thought about what a real life vehicle would look like transforming just like their favorite robo-former toy.

One particularly cool example of a vehicle that never got the Transformers treatment is the Bagger 288 excavator, one of the largest vehicles of its kind in the world.

Animator Dan DeEntremont couldn't pass up the opportunity to turn the Bagger into a dream come true for robo-obsessed kids, using his considerable 3D modeling and animation skills to bring the Bagger's transformation to life in full detail.

Realistic Mario

(YouTube link)

The Super Mario Bros learn a lesson about trying to break blocks with your head. That doesn’t work all that well in real life. Don’t try this at home -unless you’re using a video game console. My, Mario can get emotional, can’t he? This video is from Pete Holmes. -via Gamma Squad

The Math Magic Behind Pixar Movies

(Video Link)

Pixar movies look so good you know that loads of cutting edge software, mighty powerful hardware and months worth of rendering are the forces at work behind their studio productions, but the ultimate weapon in the Pixar arsenal, or any 3D arsenal for that matter, is math.

This TED Ed talk focuses on how math plays a major role in the creation of a 3D movie, with Pixar Research Lead Tony DeRose demonstrating how math is the major force behind CGI.

If you'd rather see the math at work within Pixar's proprietary software Presto you should head over to GeekTyrant and watch the included bonus video Presto Demonstration at NVIDIA's GTC Conference, which gives us a rare look at how Presto works.

Marvel At This Winter Soldier Inspired Meme - Hail Hydra

Internet memes are so timely nowadays that they spring up from pop culture the minute the source of their inspiration is released, often before many people have even seen whatever the meme is referencing.

The newest addition to this timely geek fare is the Hail Hydra meme, which sprang from a scene in Captain America Winter Soldier (no spoilers!) where one character whispers "Hail Hydra" into the ear of another character in a sinister manner.

Suddenly the internet is full of secret agents announcing their allegiance to Hydra with a whisper, in the greatest meme conspiracy of all time.

Everything We Know About Mad Men Season 7

The final season of the AMC TV series Mad Men will be a long one, cut into two parts to be shown over two years. In a logical world, that would be two seasons, but what do I know? They’ve already filmed the final episodes. Here’s some more clues to get you ready for the new season.

Season 6 ended at Thanksgiving 1968, closing out the emotional low point of the 1960s and heralding the end of cultural radicalism with Richard Nixon’s elections. Given that this show began with the new decade, it seems unlikely that Weiner will jump straight into 1970, though Mad Men has had 15-month time gaps between seasons in the past. Slate cites Stan Rizzo’s Midnight Cowboy-style jacket as further evidence that the action will take place in 1969, though we don’t quite buy Forrest Wickman’s theory that the pot-smoking creative type will turn gigolo.

There are more clues as to what we’re in store for at Flavorwire. Learn what we know so far, the rest we’ll find out when the new season starts this Sunday.

Disney Princess Batman

"I am elegance. I am the evening. I am Batman!"

You may criticize the new Batsuit. But it is a definite improvement over the nipple armor in the movie Batman & Robin. Let us be content with that.

Batman is clearly embracing the Jayne Cobb hat argument. A superhero who feels comfortable going out in a ballgown has confidence. That's a man who's not afraid of anything.

Neither is cosplayer Elpeluka Sabe, who donned this outfit for Decade Three Pictures.

RIP Archie

The comic series Life With Archie will end soon, with Archie Andrews dying in issue #36, and issue #37 will be the last. Although the details are under wraps, Archie will sacrifice his life "for a dear friend."

“We’ve been building up to this moment since we launched Life With Archie five years ago, and knew that any book that was telling the story of Archie’s life as an adult had to also show his final moment,” said Archie Comics Publisher/Co-CEO Jon Goldwater in a press release. “Archie has and always will represent the best in all of us—he’s a hero, good-hearted, humble and inherently honorable. This story is going to inspire a wide range of reactions because we all feel so close to Archie. Fans will laugh, cry, jump off the edge of their seats and hopefully understand why this comic will go down as one of the most important moments in Archie’s entire history. It’s the biggest story we’ve ever done, and we’re supremely proud of it.”

However, that’s just the series Life With Archie, which follows the Riverdale gang as they age into adults. The regular Archie Comics series, in which the characters are still teenagers, will continue as usual. To say goodbye to the adult Archie Andrews in style, issues #36 and #37 (which takes place a year after Archie’s death) will be released in multiple formats with many variant covers by acclaimed artists. You can see a roundup of some of those covers at Comics Alliance. -via Metafilter

Mario Is Destroying My House!

(Video Link)

It will probably come as no surprise that the moustachioed plumber Mario, who is known for busting blocks, kicking turtles and dramatically altering his DNA with drugs, is not fully housebroken.

He’s used to hanging around in the sewer all day and hasn't spent much time indoors since the princess was kidnapped for the first time, and when filmmaker John Huffnagle invited him in he discovered to his horror “Mario Is Destroying My House!”

John used his skills as a 3d animator and filmmaker to bring Mario’s home wrecking ways to life, and it looks like little Mario now owes Mr. Huffnagle a few hundred gold coins!

That’s like twenty nine deaths per second, how do they manage to find time to build such a compelling storyline with all that head chopping going on?

This video features tons of spoilers if you haven't seen the first three seasons of the show, and a whole cartload of violence which may be considered NSFW

Watch The Failed American Remake Of The IT Crowd

(Video Link)

(Video Link)

Seven years ago NBC created a pilot for the American TV version of The IT Crowd, the hit British comedy produced by C4 that taught us the internet is a little black box and most computer problems can be solved by turning it off and on again.

They tried to make it work, casting Joel McHale in a lead role alongside hilarious star of the original series Richard Ayoade, but their remake proved that some shows just shouldn’t be remade, some shows are perfect just the way they are.

The worst thing about the remake is the fact that they tried to match the original show shot for shot, as you can see in the side-by-side comparison video, and the American show is missing a few more key components- namely Matt Berry, Chris O'Dowd, Katherine Parkinson and Noel Fielding, in other words virtually the entire cast of the original show! Richard Ayoade is an amazing comedy talent, but even he can't carry a show like The IT Crowd all by himself.

This Millennium Falcon Car Is Vintage 1970s

(Photo: the official Star Wars Flickr feed)

You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought.

Before you object to the builders' choice of vehicle, remember that the series takes place not in the future, but "a long time ago." Bill Deacon built this interstellar transport out of a 1974 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Classic. It's shown here at Star Wars Celebration IV in 2007.

See that cockpit mounted on passenger-side mirror? It has little action figures of Han Solo and Chewbacca insideOther photos show this car with a TIE fighter hood ornament. I like that, but it's likely to get you pulled over by Imperial forces.
