Cubicles & Careers - The Fantasy Creature's Answer To D&D

(Video Link)

(Video Link)

We all know what roleplaying game players do when they’re bored- they let their minds go on a grand adventure, where perilous journeys await and the laws of fate are governed by the roll of polyhedral dice.

So what are fantasy creatures like elves and orcs doing on the other side of the looking glass while we imagine slaying them for the sake of xp? They’re sitting around roleplaying as boring humans, of course!

When your world is full of dangerous adventures and magical treasures mundane things, like asset allocation reports and water cooler small talk, can seem like a strange adventure, and the new webseries Cubicles & Careers captures the excitement of boring human roleplaying perfectly.

The series was created by Murray Triplett and Greg Johnson of FantasyCon, and so far it looks like a fun way to keep your eyeballs entertained in-between random encounters and combat rounds.

A Cute Stop Motion Short Created By An Eleven Year Old Lars Von Trier

(Video Link)

Before experimental filmmaker Lars Von Trier had begun making horrifying miniseries like The Kingdom and The Kingdom II, compelling films like The Element Of Crime and Zentropa, and downright dirty films like Nymphomaniac he was a young man obsessed with stop motion animation.

He created this cute, yet somehow still creepy, little film called Turen til Squashland when he was 11 years old, created using a paper cutout style of stop motion animation resembling a dream sequence you’d see on South Park.

It’s a far cry from the darkness and depravity found in his later films, and it shows that even visionary filmmakers like Lars Von Trier have cartoon skeletons in their closets!

34 Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy

Ready for some trivia about The Lord of the Rings? Here’s a list that tells some of the behind-the-scenes goings-on about the three movies, plus things you may not know about Tolkien, his books, and the public’s reception of them. Have a sample:

6. Sean Connery was originally offered the role of Gandalf, but had never read the books and “didn’t understand the script.”

7. Connery was offered up to 15% of the film’s total box office receipts, which would have been about $400 million (more than any other actor has ever been paid for a single role).

33. About 18,000 costumes were created from scratch for the film’s trilogy, and between 30 and 40 of the same costume were created for each main character.

Well, those were about the movies, weren’t they? You’ll find plenty more in the list at Buzzfeed.

Honest Video Game Box Art

Avid gamers can become extremely jaded towards cover art full of empty promises and paid reviews, especially when they’ve played one too many games promising the moon but delivering little more than a slice of cheese, so wouldn’t it be a real hoot if game companies started telling us what we should actually expect when we play their game?

Mario Kart will test the limits of your friendships, Skyrim is full of crazy glitches, and there’s no getting the love back once you’ve played Duke Nukem Forever…these facts would have been helpful to know before we started playing these games and went through all the heartache!

These honest video game box art treatments, and many more, have made their way into a Facebook group called HonestVGBoxArt, which boasts a whopping 14,000 members and over 100 modded video game boxes for your viewing pleasure.

Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight changed the way the world thought about Batman, giving him a new depth of emotion and melancholia that had been present in the comics for years but had yet to be translated properly to the big screen.

The Dark Knight also did a great job of bringing Bat-Mania back in full swing, and now the Caped Crusader is more popular than ever before, with a whole new batch of fans who might not have ever picked up an issue of the comic if they hadn't enjoyed the movies so much.

With all this Bat-Mania in the air people tend to think they know all there is to know about the first Dark Knight film, and what it took to bring Batman to the big screen in such an epic way, but as this informative video by Cinefix shows there's a whole lotta stuff going on behind-the-scenes that you might have missed...

Young George R. R. Martin's Letter To Marvel Comics

Once upon a time a young, unbearded George R. R. Martin read issue seventeen of Fantastic Four fresh off the drugstore rack, and he loved it so much he simply couldn’t keep his joy to himself, so he decided to write a gushing letter to the Marvel comics bullpen (aka Stan Lee and Jack Kirby) via the Fantastic Four Fan Page.

His skills as a writer were already evident, even though he was but fourteen or fifteen years old, but the overwhelming desire to destroy the lives of fictional characters readers have grown to love had yet to manifest in young Mr. Martin’s prose.

Take it from your old pal George- the best way to become a best-selling fantasy author is to read lots of comic books! 'Nuff said!

Unseen Original Concept Art From Maleficent

Disney’s epic live action movie Maleficent hit the theaters with amazing special effects, the back story behind that witchy woman who proclaimed herself Mistress of All Evil, and mixed reviews from moviegoing audiences.

But despite what you thought of the movie, the hard working artists behind the scenes who are ultimately responsible for giving the film its signature look and feel deserve a lot of praise.

Here’s a peek at some crazy original concept art for Maleficent created by concept artist Kelton Cram, which shows how the character’s look evolved from ethereal forest witch to the chiseled cheekbone version that made it onto the big screen.

PixelTrek

Need a shot of Star Trek: The Next Generation? Try out the charming game called PixelTrek. It’s not quite finished, but just being on the USS Enterprise-D will make you smile.

In what appears to be a very much unauthorised homage to Star Trek: The Next Generation, PixelTrek is a painstakingly recreated 8-bit style version of Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s erstwhile command. The project is still a work in progress but you can wander around Data and Lt. Worf’s quarters, as well as the famous Bridge, where everything seems to be frozen in time.

I’m not clear on what the ultimate goal is, or will be when the game is launched, but just taking a tour and seeing the pixelated crew is a delight.

50 Cent shared his experience playing the role of a lifetime with Jimmy Kimmel on his night time talkie show, revealing why Disney may have made a big mistake revealing that other version starring Angelina Jolie first!

“I Am Your Father” in 20 Languages

(YouTube link)

Have you ever wondered what Darth Vader’s voice sound like in the various languages that the Star Wars films have been dubbed into? Here’s your chance. Besides English, the scariest is the German: “Ich bin dein Vater!” I think the Hebrew voice could have been more ominous, but according to comments at YouTube, it wasn’t from the movie and doesn’t even translate to “I am your father.” So I don’t know what to think about the others. -via Geeks Are Sexy

Brutally Honest Disney Movie Posters

Disney movies tend to look all shiny happy fantastic when we’re kids, but as we grow up and begin to develop our analytical minds things in those beloved animated wonderlands of our youth start to fall apart.

Plot holes so big you can drive a truck through them, not so kiddie subtexts of racism, classism, and overt sexism become hard to ignore, and the much too obvious inspiration for some of those classic Disney movies can make them feel like a total ripoff.

Thankfully we have these brutally honest Disney movie posters, to let parents and their kids know what they’re getting into before they expose their eyeballs to all that Disney has to offer.

They were created by Christine Gritmon and Nick Nadel of The FW, and hopefully they'll soon become the standard for movie advertising, so we don't have to sit through another stinker like (insert disappointing movie title here)!
