This might make you feel old, but Luke Skywalker is all grown up. Mark Hamill posted a picture of himself on Instagram that gives us a small glimpse of what he will look like in Star Wars VII. He’s mentioned before that he was “contractually obligated” to grow his beard out for the movie. His son, who, like everyone else, is not allowed on the set, took the picture. -via The Daily Dot
The fundraising site Kickstarter officially jumped the shark recently when a young hustler raised over 50k to make potato salad for the first time, but there have been many Kickstarter campaigns over the last few years promising a product they can’t guarantee they’ll ever actually finish creating.
The main problem, as this comic by Dorkly’s own Tony Wilson and Andrew Bridgman demonstrates, is that you don’t need a completed project in any way to start raising funds.
Simply tell the online world that you’re going to make this great video game, show some concept art and a few seconds of gameplay footage, add some viral marketing and empty promises and you’ve got the makings of a free money storm ready to make it rain! That is, until your newfound funds get trimmed by the IRS and Kickstarter fees...
If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead, you’ve no doubt already seen the preview trailer for season five, which begins in October. If you haven’t, you can see it here. But why watch the real thing when you can watch a LEGO version? YouTube member kristo499 went the extra mile to make sure this shot-for-shot LEGO trailer has all the fine details and that the characters are totally recognizable, even if they are minifigs. -via Warming Glow
This Gallifreyan love story is brought you to by T.J. and Timmy, who dressed up as the Ninth and Tenth known incarnations of the Doctor. Shaun and Shannon Menary, photographers in Dallas, shot them perfectly costumed in front of a TARDIS that they had built specifically for this purpose.
And, you know, because having a TARDIS is always a good thing.
T.J. and Timmy explain that Doctor Who is a refuge from the stress of their busy lives. Watching it together is an opportunity for them to re-connect:
Between running a business together, living together, and traveling through time and space together… an unhealthy obsession with a TV show is what keeps some sliver of sanity in our lives!
Director James Gunn pushed to incorporate plenty of practical and makeup effects into the production of Guardians of the Galaxy to give the film a classic sci-fi flick look, and now that the film’s out we get to see all the amazing behind-the-scenes work that went into the film.
Makeup effects is an area of production popular with film fans, and there’s plenty of goodness to be found in special effects artist Dave White’s amazing alien makeup designs.
From White’s original interpretation of the Guardians characters Drax and Gamora, to the incredibly detailed character designs created for supporting roles throughout the film, Dave White's fantastic makeup effects are a major part of what made Guardians of the Galaxy such an amazing film.
As a kid growing up in the 80s cartoon heroes didn't come much buffer, bolder, or more exciting than He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
He-Man was a toon descendant of the sword and sorcery fantasy subgenre that made Dungeons & Dragons obsessed kids like me go squee, and in a clever bit of marketing the characters on the screen matched toys available for purchase at your local toy store, sparking many lifelong addictions to toys and action figures.
He-Man isn't all muscles and might, and now thanks to io9's 12 Insane Facts About He-Man and the Masters of the Universe you can discover fun facts like- Skeletor's relationship to He-Man, the geek icons who started their career on Masters, and why Teela is more important than He-Man in the overall storyline.
Maisie Williams is quickly becoming a Game of Thrones cast favorite not only because of her amazing portrayal of Arya Stark on the show, but also because of her amazingly charming personality in real life.
She's a teenager having fun with her friends and her life, a young lady who just happens to be one of the stars of the biggest TV show in the land, but there's one thing missing from her life- exposure to television from the 80s and 90s.
Like many teenagers these days she hasn't been properly introduced to the magic of television that we grown folks grew up with, but thanks to the video series Teens React To... she can now spread the gospel of Saved By The Bell:
The Fine Brothers invited guest star Maisie Williams, and ten other teens, to share their reactions to the show that taught us about diet pills, dating and the dangers of being too fashionable.
Watch as Maisie struggles to contain her embarrassment during the theme song, and declares her allegiance to Team Zack, just in time for the 25th anniversary of The Bell!
The guys from Kraftwerk might not seem like sitcom stars in the making, they’re quirky but they don't emote enough to make it in the TV comedy biz, but this "newly discovered footage" from a Kraftwerkian sitcom called Ralf and Florian shows how bizarre their show could have been.
You need only listen to songs like Showroom Dummies and The Model to know these guys enjoy tongue-in-cheek humor, but this pilot supposedly "discovered" by YouTuber Braces Tower in "a car boot sale in Dusseldorf" makes laughter feel uncomfortable:
Sprockets didn't kickstart a German avant garde sitcom revolution, so this "show" never had a chance to air alongside early 80s shows like Diff'rent Strokes and Silver Spoons, but Braces Tower's imaginative edit will make you want to pull out your Kraftwerk records and have an old school pop-lock dance party!
You’ve heard it said that the Lord of the Rings saga would have been much shorter and simpler if our heroes had just rode their giant eagles into Mordor. But, just as one does not simply walk into Mordor, neither does one simply fly in, either. See, giant eagles are like the Wicked Witch's flying monkeys: only used when the plot needs to hurry up and cover a lot of ground that earlier in the story took too much time. Brotherhood Workshop brings us a chapter of an alternative version of Lord of the Rings in LEGO. -via Geeks Are Sexy
A TV show that’s had 800 episodes over a 50-year period produces a lot of trivia, so any list you see probably has some tidbits you’ve never read before. A list of Doctor Who trivia at Buzzfeed tells us, among other things, how inbred the production is.
7. In fact, three of the actresses who played the Doctor’s companions went on to become agents, and all of them ended up representing actors who would play the Doctor.
15. Tennant is married to Georgia Moffett, who played the Doctor’s daughter opposite him in “The Doctor’s Daughter” and is actually the daughter of the fifth Doctor, Peter Davison. So the couple’s children have Doctors for their father and grandfather.
20. The 2008 episode “The Fires of Pompeii” was notable for having a future companion and a future Doctor in its cast as different characters – Karen Gillan and Capaldi.
My personal favorite is the story of the fourth Doctor’s knitted scarf. I’m sure you’ll find something that will surprise you among the 39 things.
It seems rather strange that so many mysteries still exist in the world of Nintendo, considering each of their characters/series have had multiple sequels come out across all platforms, but as it turns out some of these secrets were revealed in Nintendo character guide released in 1993.
Lingering questions like Yoshi’s real name, Princess Peach’s magic power, and Mario’s personality profile were revealed in a guide that was "distributed to licensors so they’d better understand the characters before using their image", facts kindly shared via Twitter by Blake Harris, author of Console Wars.
Blake's insightful discovery might challenge the way you've thought about your favorite Nintendo characters all these years, but maybe knowing the truth will make you feel even closer to these beloved video game stars. What's not to love about a dinosaur named T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas?
Starring in the most popular movie of the summer, with the whole world of media watching your every move, means fans are going to be curious about your everyday life.
How much you make, what kind of car you drive, and where you live suddenly become the big questions for fans, but what if you've been living on a spaceship for the last year?
Well, then you give those fine folks a tour of your spaceship, in the style of MTV Cribs.
Chris Pratt proudly shows us around the amazingly detailed Milano ship set used in Guardians of the Galaxy in this Marvel video "Check the Milano, Yo!", and now we know why he doesn't want to move back into his real crib!
Kim Jong-Un is apparently quite easy to entertain, and he was all smiles and eyes full of wonder when he visited the Chonji Lubricant Factory and got to watch machines squirt out piles of lubricant:
There are plenty of beings across the galaxy that could stand to lose a bit of weight, but Hutts just don't look right without their signature slug-like gut.
Hutt weight loss is also liable to render them vulnerable to blaster fire, which could be bad for business, so if you see a Hutt thinking about getting a gym membership remind them that their bulk is what makes them repulsive beautiful.
This Hutt oriented anti-weight loss comic was brought to you by Steve Hamaker, as a reminder- a skinny Hutt is a dead Hutt!
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were always meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek, and even the far more serious comic book version often approached ideas of mutation, vigilantism and teenhood in a playful manner.
Villains like Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady and Leatherhead were already pushing the boundaries of what constitutes a challenging villain, but they're pushovers compared to the crazy creations that made io9's list of Thirteen Of The Most Ridiculous TMNT Villains Of All Time.
It's almost like the folks who came up with these whacked out baddies were just drawing names out of a hat, taking the whole idea of mutation to a most ridiculous extreme.
A hybrid monster with the power of five classic monsters in one? I guess even movie monsters aren't immune to The Ooze. A sattelite-human hybrid named Vid Vicious? Never mind the bollocks, just aim for his tin can head!
