New Map Shows Sea Floor In Greater Detail Than Ever Before

(Image: David Sandwell, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego)

You know what is utterly terrifying in scope and takes up most of the Earth's surface? The ocean. If Pacific Rim taught us anything, it is that there are PROBABLY aliens living in there, just waiting for the perfect time to hatch and surface. The truth is, we know very little about the ocean. There are depths that have yet to be explored, and it is safe to assume, within those depths, there are new sea creatures we have never seen before that will fuel our nightmares. Maybe not of Pacific Rim proportions, but angler fish prove size doesn't matter when it comes to what is terrifying in the ocean. Sorry, I am totally getting sidetracked here.

GizMag has an article right now about some new sea-maps that have been released that show unprecedented detail in the ocean floor. Mountains and crevices mapped out that allow scientists and oceanographers further insight into how the continents were formed, and just what may be happening miles under the sea's surface. The site explains further:

The new map's accuracy is thanks to improved remote sensing instruments and access to two previously untapped streams of satellite data. These come from the ESA's CryoSat-2, which is usually focused on monitoring polar ice volume but also operates continuously over the oceans, and NASA's Jason-1, which was redirected to map Earth's gravity field during the last year of its 12-year mission. Data from these satellites was combined with existing data and used to develop a scientific model that captures gravity measurements on the ocean seafloor.

While incredibly impressive, I happen to have a sort of Pandora's Box vibe about the ocean, though. I mean, do we REALLY want to find out what is down there? I was just informed by some people far more professional than I that we do, indeed, want to know what is in the ocean, as well as its topography. I guess I just have a more vivid imagination than most.

Smartphone Digital Assistant Can Speak Klingon

(Video Link)

Cortana is the interactive digital assistant on Microsoft's Windows smartphones. Like Siri on Apple's iPhones, you can talk to Cortana and receive verbal responses.

The engineers who designed Cortana are Trekkies, so they programmed appropriate responses into it. As you can see from the above video, you can ask Cortana to speak in Klingon.

If you don't speak Klingon, don't worry: you can also speak in English and give essential commands, such as "Beam me up" and "Set phasers to stun."

Can You Sneeze With Your Eyes Open?

(YouTube Link)

So can you sneeze without closing your eyes? Some people are aware, and some are blissfully unaware until the sneeze comes and the force of the sneeze causes you to shut your eyes. There's the rumor that we close our eyes when we sneeze as a reflex because the pressure can cause our eyes to shoot out of our skulls. I know, I know, it is silly, but a great many people think it. So can you sneeze with your eyes open?

D News put together this video explaining why you can, indeed, sneeze without blowing out your eyeballs. Most of us knew this anyway, but it is nice to know the science behind things sometimes. Keep in mind, if you would rather not watch it and go on believing we can shoot our eyeballs out of our skulls with a strong enough sneeze, that's fine. No respect lost here. Some just dare to dream bigger than others. We cannot fault you for that.

How Supernatural's Ten Seasons Represent Buddhist Stages of Reincarnation

supesImage Credit: The CW

The CW show Supernatural has filled a void left by shows like The X-Files. These shows allow us a peak into a world very different from our own. It is classic horror and fantasy escapism. When a show like Supernatural has run for 10 seasons, you get some really interesting fan theories. A perfect example is how Supernatural's Ten Seasons Represent Buddhist Stages Of Reincarnation. It is apparent some serious thought was put into this. In terms of season five of the show representing Bodhisattva:

I'd actually heard of a Bodhisattva before researching this article: a spiritual guide and enlightened being that helps others. It's also the second-to-top rung of the reincarnation ladder even though we're only halfway through the article, which might be a hint to where the show quality goes in later seasons. Season 5, which is all about trying to constrain the fallout from the apocalypse, is an appropriate one for Bodhisattva as well. The brothers have an almost completely unselfish motivation and a genuinely heroic goal.

Any fans of Supernatural should give this a read.

5 Biggest Video Game Bosses

Sometimes, one of the coolest parts of a video game is when you finally reach the boss fight. Since the earliest years in gaming, video game bosses have truly evolved. Where once they were a pixel, slightly larger than you, now bosses can sometimes be larger than the screen. Just a massive beast who wants nothing more than to crush you like a bug under its thumb.

Luckily, over the years, the good guys have gotten considerably more talented, too, and often show these lumbering creatures who the REAL boss is. YouTube User Qubimaxima assembled this very cool video list of massive end bosses from recent video games. The best part is, he feels no need to exposition much over the bosses or why they are here. He just lets their massive size speak for itself.

(YouTube Link)

I will say, there is something incredibly gratifying about taking down some massive beast who wants nothing more to destroy you. But you don't have to be a game geek like me to appreciate the design of some of these bosses, or just marvel at their size.

Marvel Teletubbies

Captain Winky, Hulksy, Lalarine, and Spiderpo are ready for an adventure! They'll go by themselves, since Iron-Noo is too hungover to go with them. John Paolo Santos, an artist in Malolos, the Philippines, drew the four Teletubbies as Marvel superheroes.

Beautiful R2-D2 Wood Stove Is the Droid You're Looking For

Instructables member doddiezoomer is a technology schoolteacher "tasked with inspiring the next generation of designers." He's got the right stuff for that job! Doddiezoomer is great at merging fine craftsmanship and a geeky style.

We've previously seen his Darth Vader wood stove. More recently, he made this elegant wood stove from a steel gas bottle and boxes. The metal details nicely mirror those of R2-D2 and the burnished coat looks like he's had a few too many months on Tatooine without a bath.

12 Hilarious Reactions to iPhone Bendgate

Seems a great many folks are not too impressed with the fact that you can just bend the new iPhone and it stays bent. In other words, once your new Iphone gets bent somehow in your pocket, you will then have a bent phone. Not just in theory, but in your actual pocket. Again, to reiterate. It does not bend back to the original shape.

This is a massive flaw that many internet sites and other competing companies have jumped on almost immediately, resulting in what will now be called "bendgate." The website Oddee thought it might be fun to gather some of the best iPhone 6 "bendgate" photos and assembled them all into one place for you. The abve photo Samsung quickly put out after the bend news leaked is just one of many spot on parodies of the new iPhone's unofficial bend feature.

I know those of you who rushed out and bought the phone that day must be upset. The rest of us who are still using our old phones think all this is hilarious. Sorry. Sometimes being poor pays off. The rich people run the beta tests on products for their first years, then when all the bugs are worked out, it is years later and the rest of us can finally afford it. Thanks for that!

Pre-Code Horror Movies - The Early Days Of The Silver Scream

Horror movies have very simplistic roots, and in the early days of monster cinema a fiend could shake the audience to the core with just a sinister look and an appropriately eerie soundtrack.

(YouTube Link)

Nowadays horror movies are so stuck on making us jump out of our seats, or crawl out of our skin with disgust, that it's hard to remember how pure the chills and thrills used to be.

The good old days of Bela Lugosi using his vampiric gaze to charm audiences into submission, or Lon Cheney Jr. becoming every kind of creature imaginable, may be gone, but their cinematic legacy lives on.

Rediscover the Horror Films Of The Hollywood Pre-Code Era, and show the younger generation of fans what the real face of horror looks like!

There are some things you just don’t want to see your childhood heroes, animated and otherwise, doing to themselves or each other.

Seeing these beloved childhood icons either acting like adults, or like real animals, fills our inner child with dread, and yet our adult selves can’t seem to look away.

It's natural to feel ambivalence as you look through these dark and witty works by Ben Chen, but don’t worry- no bunnies, crickets or puppets, imaginary or otherwise, were harmed in the making of these twisted illustrations!

The Mountain: Killer Game of Thrones Fan Art

Though I will refrain from mentioning what makes the Mountain character from Game of Thrones so important (in case people are still catching up on books or last season), but it is safe to say he is one of the more intimidating characters ever put into a universe like this. Just a lumbering mountain of a man (sorry, that was too good to resist) who seems like he could stomp anyone who steps in his way to death without batting an eye.

DeviantART member Paranoidvin (Marvin del Mundo) made this amazing representation of the character that really just sums him up incredibly well. He is a man named after a mountain for a reason, and this piece really seems to capture that.

The hollowed eyes in the background? Well, I wont ruin that for you, but brilliant touch.

Let's Do Nothing in Video Games

Anyone who has been playing video games for a huge portion of their lives can tell you, if you put the controller down and let the character just idle, there will often be a special animation you are treated to. It varies from character to character, and seems to involve the character either breaking the fourth wall (think Sonic the Hedgehog), which you will see in this video, to characters who just seem bored and want to entertain themselves while you are ignoring them. They are sometimes funny, sometimes snarky, but always incredibly witty and help foster the love most of us have for gaming. It's nerd stuff added to nerd stuff, which makes it even MORE cool.

(YouTube Link)

YouTube User Master of Hyrule has put together this pretty awesome collection of idle animations from many video games over the past years. You don't even have to be a gamer to appreciate the thought and work put into some of these animations, even though the developers were aware some people may never slow down enough to apprecite them.

Well, now we can.

It almost makes you stop for a moment and wonder what other wondeful little things you may have missed in some of these games.
