10 Minimalist Horror Movie Posters

Artist: Thomas Emery

It is crazy to think that a movie that took years to write and direct and produce can often be summed up in one single, minimalist frame of artwork. One picture that grabs the entirety of the movie and squeezes itself down to tell its story using no words and a single image. Yet the best artists seem to be able to do this ease, and have a lot of fun in the process.

Someone wrote me this week and pointed out this 10 Minimalist Horror Movie Posters list to me, and knowing I was a huge fan of horror, they asked me if I could identify all 10 movies. Well, of course I did! But I think that stands as more of a testimony to how astute the posters are, and not my overall horror prowess.

Check out the list for yourself and see how well you do.

Old School vs. New School

So for a moment, let's say video games are real. Just pretend for a sec, dammit. What would happen if old school, pixel games somehow met up and clashed with the new school, realistic looking games? In my head, I imagine it would be an epic match up of mayhem, with pixels breaking off and polygonal blood splashing everywhere.

The reality is, the folks over at RocketJump put together this awesome video of what it would be like if different generations of games all met up at the same time in the real world. And while it may not be quite as violent as my vision, it is badass, and will get any gamers and video game fans drooling on themselves. Though it has been floating around the internet for a bit, safe to say some of you missed it, and that is just not okay. Pretty sure seeing Lara Croft climb into a Space Invaders ship and take off fulfilled some weird geek fantasy of mine I didn't even realize I had until I saw it happen. This might do the same for you.

Or you can just marvel at how cool it is.

A Cinderella Story:The Best Of Bill Murray

Bill Murray is the man. A million people have said it before me, and a million more will say afterwards. He is just one of those actors that transcended his celebrity status and just seems like an awesome, approachable, every-man. So rather than me sit here and say the same things everyone else has about Bill Murray, how about we just sit here and watch some of his best moments from film?

We shall allow his body of work to speak on his behalf. It's a beautiful thing.

Bill, hit me up sometime. We'll go crash a party together. It'll be magical.

The Tolkien Fan

Even if you couldn’t see their faces, it should be obvious which of these Tolkien fans is the older one. Sigh. This comic from CommitStrip is labeled “a true story.” Share this with someone young and let us know if you have to explain it. -via Geeks Are Sexy

Freddy And Jason Get Murderous Makeovers In Lady Killers

Freddy and Jason went from two ordinary names to monikers synonymous with pure evil thanks to horror movies, but these average joes of the slasher world are in desperate need of a makeover.

Freddy revamped his scare tactics by making real life feel like a movie in Wes Craven's New Nightmare, and when Jason X went to space he got a snazzy new mask and cybernetic implants, but these changes simply aren't enough.

(YouTube link)

Thankfully, Nerdist and Andrew Bowser knew exactly what to do with those classic killers to bring them back to life in style- they gender swapped 'em.

Lady Killers stars Adrianne Curry as Freddy, and cosplayers Abby Dark Star as Jason and Leanna Vamp as Ash, and it's the perfect combination of cheesy, geeky and slasher-y to get you in the Halloween spirit!

The Quotable Doctor Zoidberg

In the world of Futurama there is only one Decapodian doctor you should call when you need your limbs snipped off, or a tongue depressor shoved in your ear- Zoidberg.

He’s the lonely lobster with the funny accent, and even though he seems like a total dweeb he actually has some wise words to share with the world, if you can stand listening to him long enough to hear them!

Zoidberg isn’t a philosopher, or a sage, he’s just an ordinary guy looking for the occasional dumpster sandwich to nibble on as he makes his way through the world of the far flung future.

Take a look back at Zoidberg’s beautiful mind with these 20 Hysterical Dr. Zoidberg 'Futurama' Quotes, and the next time you're looking for a quote to bust out at a dinner party you'll think "why not Zoidberg?"

366 Weird Movies You Need To See

weird

The first weird film I ever remember seeing was Eraserhead when I was just a teenager, and man did it mess with my head.  What I had noticed days after watching it was, unlike most films, Eraserhead stuck with me. It seeped like black oil into my subconscious and just seemed to stay there. From that moment on, I have had a bit of an obsession with weird movies. Movies that are not afraid to tell unconventional stories. Movies so strange and surreal, most would ignore them. So you can only imagine my delight when I found the site 366 Weird Movies. I feel lot like Charlie when he got his golden ticket today.

On most sites, you may get one or two top ten lists of weird movies, but this a site devoted to them. Now if you don't mind, I need to go spend the rest of my life going through this website and finding wonderfully twisted movies to lose myself in.

Gritty Television Shows Get A Niceness Makeover

In the entertainment worlds of movies and television nice almost never appeals to viewers, unless the viewers are young and easily entertained.

Grown folks like a bit of grit with their story sandwich, which is why shows like Breaking Bad and Game Of Thrones have become mighty popular in the world of televised entertainment.

So what would our favorite shows look like after receiving a niceness makeover?

Probably a lot like these comic strips created by Tony Wilson of Dorkly, in which he presents nicer versions of four favorite TV shows- Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Hannibal and the most radical remake of them all- Thomas The Nice Engine.

Man Builds Custom TARDIS for Marriage Proposal

Redditor muffinman5423 built a TARDIS in order to propose to his girlfriend. It's a perfect model of the original that, from the outside, is a 1:1 scale replica. And it worked: she said yes!

What would he have done if she said no? Muffinman5432 had a backup plan.

(Video Link)

Here's a video of the actual proposal. It's really sweet and touching.

My own proposal was less complex (you know, the KISS principle). My wife and I are both librarians and I coincidentally proposed to her at a library. She loved it anyway, despite the absence of a TARDIS. But she has informed me that if the Doctor ever offers to take her away on an adventure, she's going to accept.

Star Trek's Geordi La Forge, Played by LeVar Purrton

(Photo: shadowcatt)

Lt. Comm. Geordi La Forge, chief engineer on board the USS Enterprise, would be glad to reroute warp power through the phase inducers. But, first, he's going to take a nap on the impulse drive manifold because it's so warm right now.

How To Visualize Music Differently

(YouTube Link)

You listen to music, but do you see it? Do you hear it in the raindrops around you, or realize that there is a rhythm to everything? The way our brains visualize and process musical patterns factors into both how we hear music and how we "see" it. I wont even keep going and pretend I am smart enough to trick you into thinking I have any idea what I am talking about. Instead, I will just let the always-brilliant Ted Ed series of Ted Talks teach you how to visualize music differently. Who knew something as simple as a wheel would change our perception of music?

That last line will make sense after you watch the video.

Now if you don't mind, I am just gonna flip on the blacklight and visualize some Pink Floyd music.

A Look Back At Former Disney Theme Park Rides And Attractions

Disneyland first opened its doors over fifty years ago, and in that time Disney Imagineers have done their best to keep the park fresh by constantly updating and adding to the park, but with progress comes destruction.

Many rides and attractions have been torn down over the years- some, like the Submarine Voyage's upgrade to the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, were revamped for the good of the park, while others like the Flight To The Moon/Mission To Mars are sorely missed to this day.

Take a look back at Disney theme park history with 11 Wonderful Former Disney Rides, compiled by Mental Floss, and see if you remember seeing any of these rides and attractions before they were sent to the scrapyard.

Minions, Adventure Time, and Old Simpsons on The Simpsons

As many of you know, The Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors is a real treat every year, often blending The Simpson's perfect pop culture prowess with some twisted humor and horror elements. I found a clip recently that I thought might have been faked. Come to find out, it's not. This is actually a scene from the forthcoming Halloween episode of this long-running show.

Rather than ruin just how magical it this clip is, I will just sit back and let you watch it (while I watch it myself about 300 more times).

(YouTube Link)

I wont lie. The Adventure Time alt-world reality of the Simpsons made me squee with delight.

Star Lord's Awesome Mix Tape Is About To Be Released On Cassette

When millions of fans got hooked on a feeling from watching Guardians of the Galaxy they wanted to bring that sweet soundtrack home, so Marvel obliged by releasing the soundtrack on CD and MP3.

Marvel also teamed up with Mondo to release a limited edition vinyl version, with amazing cover art by Tyler Stout, but fans who wanted an actual mix tape that felt like it'd been handed to them by Peter Quill himself were out of luck- until now.

Marvel has announced that they’re releasing the Awesome Mix Tape in it's original format- on audio cassette, complete with a cover that looks like it was written up by Peter's mother, just like in the movie!

Now those who still have a tape deck can play the awesome mix as it was intended, and youngsters who’ve never even seen a tape deck can stare at the cassette while they listen to the tracks on their MP3 player.
