C-3PO and the Forest of Doom

This weird LEGO stop-motion video portrays the Ewoks sacrificing C-3PO in a religious ceremony. Looks like they figured out he wasn't a god after all. But it's not Return of the Jedi, it's actually that horrifying scene from Indiana Jones and the Temple Doom, with original audio. Altogether, this is pretty creepy.

What's the point? You'll see that this story explains one of those things that happened between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Because there is no detail in the Star Wars universe too small to be examined and made into a fan film. -via Geeks Are Sexy

Thomas Lenk Is Back And Just As Fabulously Fashiony As Ever

Celebrities aren't always trendsetters or fashionable at all, but when they are fashiony the way they wear those clothes that are different than regular people clothes makes them look extra cool in their cool clothes.

That's why celebrity outfit recreations are all the rage among clothes-wearing people who used to be famous, want to pretend they're famous, or simply want to stun when they enter a room.

And speaking of stunning and used to be famous here's Tommy Lenk, a guy who used to be on Buffy The Vampire Slayer and is obsessed with the recreation of celebrity outfits but isn't willing to actually buy new clothes.

Tom stares at pictures of fashiony celebrities and models in clothes for a long time before he decides whether their outfit passes his rigorous screening process, and once it's approved he recreates it with gusto.

These Dungeons & Dragons Memes Are Sure To Be A Critical Hit With Your Gaming Group

(Image Link)

Dungeons & Dragons sessions tend to be pretty lighthearted affairs, and even when the stakes are high and the pressure is on to roll that critical hit (or at least refrain from rolling a critical fail) players are still happy to be gaming.

Which is why memes and D&D go together like Hot Pockets and Mountain Dew, and RPG memes help us keep the torch fires burning until we next descend into the dungeon depths in pursuit of glory and XP.

Eye-Popping Pop Art Painted On Prescription Drug Packages

So many people are on prescription drugs that pharmaceuticals have become as American as apple pie and the Fourth of July, and the prevalence of prescription drugs in our society has become a common theme in pop culture and pop art.

But prescription drugs aren't just a theme in the works of Australian Pop artist Ben Frost- their packages are the very canvas on which Ben paints his provocative, eye-popping and borderline pornographic art pieces.

Ben's works are equal parts playful, sexy and reverent, as he channels Pop art masters like Lichtenstein and Rosenquist while painting the proper image on each drug's package.

What Would You Do If You Saw A Sabertooth Tiger Strolling Down The Sidewalk?

It would be strange to see a sabertooth tiger strutting around a modern city, since the science behind Jurassic Park never became mainstream. And yet when people spotted a sabertooth walking in L.A. back in 2012 they somehow managed to keep their cool.

Maybe they're so jaded by the magic of Hollywood that nothing makes them trip out anymore, or maybe they knew they were on camera so they tried to save face.

Either way folks were way too calm and collected when that amazing looking life-sized robotic model created to promote the Ice Age Encounters exhibit at the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum went walking by.

But this kid had the right idea when he posed for a photo op with the robo-tiger.

Personally I would have followed that amazing creation all over town, and I probably would have asked its "handlers" for a job application!

What Happens If You Survive The Apocalypse But Only Have One Pair Of Contacts?

Have you ever seen the The Twilight Zone episode called "Time Enough At Last"?

It's about a guy who just wants uninterrupted time to read, which he finally finds in a post-apocalyptic world reduced to rubble by an H-bomb.

Faced with nothing but time and stacks of book to read the man feels like his life is finally perfect, until he ends up stumbling and shattering his only pair of prescription glasses.

(YouTube Link)

As a nearsighted fellow this episode has always made me wonder what I would do about vision correction after the apocalypse, and apparently it triggered something in Mental Floss' Nick Greene too.

After the flames finally stop raining down and the world has settled into an ashen plain of sorrow I come to a startling realization: My glasses are at home and I’m wearing monthly disposable contact lenses.

I would be at a competitive disadvantage should I ever have to enter "survival mode" without the aid of glasses or contacts. Even the smallest and weakest of children who happen to be blessed with normal eyesight would leap above me on the food chain. I would be susceptible to naturally occurring apocalyptic hurdles and booby traps —a comically obvious net placed on the ground could very easily be my downfall.

He explored the quest for vision correction in a post-apocalyptic world at length, including how long a pair of contacts would last, how to clean them in a filthy world without fresh water, and how long those new pairs waiting to be plundered would last.

Well well well, looks like I'm in business. A pair of factory-fresh lenses will last around three years, so I should be okay until civilization is rebuilt. When that time comes, I can visit my optometrist for a long-overdue checkup.

What A Normal Kid Would Do In Stranger Things

The kids in Stranger Things are far from normal because they face perilous situations and monsters from another dimension with a brave face on while normal kids, and most normal adults, would beat feet at the first sign of trouble.

They see Eleven slaughter a squad of soldiers with her mind and think "yay, happy ending!" instead of "OMG I'm about to have a serious case of PTSD, after I puke my guts out".

But, as you'll see in this comic by Jacob Andrews, the biggest difference between real life kids and the Stranger Things gang is responsibility and reliability, two words that are not part of a normal kid's vocabulary.

The Gamers You'll Meet In 2017

These days gamers come from all walks of life, from the stuffy suits of the business world to the jobless slackers who live in their parents' basement, and yet according to this JHALL comic they can still be categorized by gaming style.

The Nintendads choose speed and substance over flash, posting their dope speed runs on Facebook where nobody cares, while the Hipsters think they're changing the virtual world by making games reflect their "unique style".

They care way too much about style for their games to ever have any substance, and yet our morbid curiosity makes us want to see what they come up with next.

The Mobile Minecraft Minors are the newest breed of gamer, and yet they manage to log so many hours on their parents' tablets and smartphones they'll need their own data plan before kindergarten.

The Look of the 13th Doctor

Jodie Whittaker will portray the 13th incarnation of the Doctor when the TV series Doctor Who returns. The first woman Doctor is under a lot of pressure to live up to fans' expectations, so costume designer Ray Holman knew he had to get the look just right. To do that, he referenced past Doctors and incorporated details from many of them into the new costume. Also, one cannot help but imagine that he put some thought into how cosplayers will study each detail to recreate them themselves. Holman also designed the dress of Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi's characters. Fans have a mixed reaction, with many pointing out that the rainbow stripe reminds them either of Mork from Ork (Mork and Mindy) or Wesley Crusher (Star Trek: The Next Generation). Metafilter has a roundup of reviews of the new costume. Jody Whittaker's debut on Doctor Who is expected to happen during a special broadcast on Christmas Day, with the series returning sometime in 2018.

Lucas The Spider Is The Cutest Arachnid Ever Created

Very few people actually think spiders have cute faces, and even fewer will admit they do because they know people will give them trouble and act like they're crazy for thinking something so creepy is cute.

But you don't have to be crazy to think Lucas the spider is cute because animator Joshua Slice designed Lucas with maximum cuteness in mind, and then Joshua sealed the deal by having his nephew Lucas voice the little scamp.

Lucas the spider is still in the developmental stages, but hopefully we'll see him starring in an animated series or feature sometime soon!

Jeff Goldblum Critiques Jeff Goldblum Tattoos

Jeff Goldblum rates a solid "10" in my book, and whether he's turning into a human-fly hybrid, proving Earth Girls Are Easy or talkin' 'bout how "Life, uh, finds a way" Jeff Goldblum makes a movie better just by being in it.

It's clear that I'm a fan of his work, but how does Jeff Goldblum feel about the characters portrayed by Jeff Goldblum? And what does he think about people tattooing those characters on their skin?

(YouTube Link)

GQ asked Jeff Goldblum to critique real tattoos based on the characters he has portrayed, rating them from one Goldblum to ten Goldblums, and in the process we learn how much Jeff appreciates seeing body art featuring his face.

An Animated Short About A Cat, A Dog And The Bakery Of Their Dreams

Working towards your goals and striving for success are both admirable pursuits in life, but it's easy to get so caught up in achieving your goals that you lose sight of the other things in life that are just as important- like our loved ones.

In Fernanda Frick's Here's The Plan an ambitious young critter couple dreams of opening a cupcake bakery, only to have their dreams, and their love, put on hold when the oven breaks.

The story is touching and relatable, the symbolism relevant, but most of all your eyes will delight in the appeal of the fantastic animation.

Here's the plan - Animated Short Film from Fernanda Frick on Vimeo.

When Was "A Long Time Ago"?

The Star Wars saga takes place “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” which should put it completely out of the reach of human interference. But fandoms don't work like that, particularly one as large as the Star Wars fandom. Geeks gonna geek, and now Georgetown University assistant physics professor Dr. Patrick Johnson is speculating about the "when" of "A long time ago." In his new book The Physics of Star Wars, Johnson creates a timeline from the beginning of the universe.

The first galaxies were formed around a billion years after the big bang, so that cuts out a billion years. The films depict many star systems with mature planets and intelligent life. It took the solar system about 500 million years to form, and it formed 4.6 billion years ago, so it’s reasonable to assume that Star Wars is about 5 billion years after the formation of the first galaxy1. There are also fully formed multicellular creatures of many different shapes and kinds. It took about 2 billion years for single-celled organisms to evolve into multicellular organisms, and another billion years before those took the form of life that we could recognize as creatures.

Although it took billions of years for life to evolve on Earth, that does not mean the process would always take billions of years. The first eukaryotic cell is thought to have formed from a bacterium entering a prokaryotic cell and living symbiotically rather than being destroyed by its host cell. This was a random fluke that took millions of years to happen. If that event had happened on the first day of prokaryotic life, it could have shaved off a significant chunk of time for evolution.

That pegs the Star Wars story at least at big bang plus nine billion years, but Johnson is just getting started. Read more about the possibilities of the Star Wars timeline in a book excerpt at Wired. -via Uproxx
