Star Trek/Gilligan's Island Cosplay

Jenn of Epbot attended MegaCon this past weekend in Orlando. There, she spotted these great cosplayers who mixed two gems from the 60s: Star Trek and Gilligan's Island. The three hour tour has turned into a five year mission for the Skipper, Gilligan, and Ginger. They've equipped themselves appropriately with the boat's radio as a tricorder, a clamshell communicator, and bamboo phasers. You can see more of Jenn's cosplay photos here.

New T-Shirts from the NeatoShop:

Check Out The New Jurassic Park Trailer

Last July, Alex shared the gorey image of Steven Speilberg sitting beside one of his newest kills. Animal activists were rightly outraged by the killing of such a rare and beautiful creature. As if that wasn't bad enough, now one Redditor has shared these images of a poor, bound T-rex being towed down the road as though it's just a big hunk of plastic.

Will the madness ever stop?!? End dinosaur cruelty!

Christopher Eccleston Finally Reveals Why He Left Doctor Who

If you couldn't tell just by reading the blog, it's fair to say that most of the writers on Neatorama are big fans of Doctor Who. So, like most Whovians, we've been left to wonder what exactly caused the rift between Christopher Eccleston and the producers of the show given that Eccleston says he loved playing The Doctor and he was quite popular among fans.

Well, if you've been wondering the same thing, you can finally put your mind at ease. According to Christopher Eccleston, his choice to play the Doctor with his natural accent (he's from Manchester) was what drove him and showrunner Russell T. Davies apart. The actor claims Northern accents like his are looked down upon and that people consider those with those accents to sound less intelligent. Eccleston wanted to challenge these views while playing what is arguably the most famous character in all of England, but Davies was against it from the start.

Without hearing Davies' version of the story, it's hard to say if this is absolute truth or just Eccleston's take, but it is notable that the writers made a number of jokes about David Tennant's Doctor having a Northern accent after he replaced Eccleston.

Of course, now there are fans complaining that they can't understand a word that the very Scottish Peter Capaldi says, so I guess there's just no pleasing everyone.

Avengers Family Feud

(YouTube link)

The show Jimmy Kimmel Live! staged a celebrity version of The Family Feud starring the actors who portray the Avengers in Marvel’s movie series. Watch Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Hemsworth square off against Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner. Yes, they split into the teams of “stars I recognize” and “stars I don’t recognize.” The actors weren’t very good at the game, but that doesn’t matter because they don’t need the prize money -as if there were any. -via Tastefully Offensive

Stephen Hawking Sings Monty Python… Galaxy Song

(YouTube link)

If you recall the 1983 film Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life, you’ll recognize “Galaxy Song.” That was far from the only incarnation of the tune.

“Galaxy Song” was previously included on the 1989 album “Monty Python Sings”, and included in the 2014 reissue of the album, “Monty Python Sings (again)”, in its original form - sung by Eric Idle - to coincide with Monty Python’s record breaking “Monty Python Live (mostly) – One Down Five to Go” run of 10 live shows at The O2, London. On film during the live shows, Professor Brian Cox berated the scientific inaccuracy of the “Galaxy Song » lyrics before Professor Stephen Hawking knocked him to the ground. Hawking then began reciting the “Galaxy Song” lyrics as he lifted off to journey through outer space. It is this unique rendition of “Galaxy Song” which is now available as a single.

And of course, available as a new video that includes scenes from Monty Python's live shows (on and off stage) and footage of Hawking in action. There’s a video game to accompany the song, in which you play Asteroids as Hawking and shoot at members of Monty Python.

The Millennium Falcon Trapped inside a Giant Chocolate Egg

The geeky food blog Sweet & Geek used a giant chocolate Easter egg (translation) to recreate what I suspect is the space slug scene from The Empire Strikes Back. The interior of the asteroid is filled with sponge cake, creamy frosting, and butter cream shaped to look like grass or tentacles. If you do not have the original Millennium Falcon available, you can use a chocolate version, as Sweet & Geek did.

Pacapong: An Insane Game Mashup

Do you love retro video games, but find them too easy to play after all these years? Maybe if you played them all at the same time, it would be more challenging. That’s what Pacapong does: it combines Pac-Man, Pong, and Space Invaders into one game that will put your concentration and dexterity to the test.

To increase your score-bar in Pacapong you simply collect as many pills as possible within the time limit.  Once fired your Pacman can be controlled to a small degree, but will always be inclined to heading towards your opponents side.  To make things a little trickier (and more awesome) you also have to contend with ghosts, hit them and you’ll lose a chunk of your score bar (unless you pick up a power pill).  To make things yet even more trickier (and indeed more awesome), you also have to contend with Space Invaders who descend your side of the screen whenever your opponent collects them – with some careful manoeuvring you can even shoot them with the pills you collect with Pacman.

It seems insanely complicated to me, but I still find those old games challenging individually. You can see a video of gameplay at YouTube. Pacapong is a free download. -via Unreality

Lil Thrones

(YouTube link)

As it has been done many times for more innocuous TV shows, George R.R. Martin was easily convinced to take his very adult stories from Game of Thrones and spin them off into an animated version aimed at children. Luckily, it will most likely only be one episode, as it was produced by Team Coco. Contains adult subject matter and mild spoilers if you know the characters. Honestly, this is not for children. -via Uproxx

The Many Problems of Star Trek: The Next Generation

Chris Piers of the pop culture blog The Robot’s Pajamas runs a regular feature called “Star Trek Problems.” It highlights the painful reality that Trekkies must face: many aspects of Star Trek: The Next Generation don’t make sense. You can view them all here. Warning: be prepared to lose the next hour because you won’t be able to stop yourself from reading them all.

The Game of Thrones Recap You Never Knew You Wanted

(Video Link)

Warning: The video has language that's NSF and, obviously, spoilers

Game of Thrones is returning on Sunday and just because Key & Peele are on vacation doesn't mean these two nerds were going to miss out on the chance to geek out over the show. Their valet characters are a perfect pair for summing up the first four seasons in the most ridiculous way they know how.

10 Totally Trippy Kid's TV Shows From The 1960s

(Image Link)

The Sixties will always be known as an extremely exciting and interesting era, and with all the interesting and exciting things going on in the world kid's TV shows tried to keep things interesting as well.

Some shows played on the world's obsession with space, others embraced psychedelia and rock music to keep things thoroughly mod, but above all kid's TV shows were stranger in the 60s than they'd ever been before!

(This list is far from comprehensive, so please feel free to tell me about any shows from the 60s that I left out and I'll include them in a follow-up article.)

1. Space Angel (1962-64)-

(Image Link)

Space Angel centers around Captain Scott McCloud and his crew, who are agents working for the Interplanetary Space Force aboard the spaceship Starduster.

They battle extraterrestrial enemies such as the Anthenians and the Evil Queen Of Space, and with a little help from McCloud's alter ego Space Angel they're able to defend Earth one static panel at a time.

Compositing video footage of a talking human mouth over traditional animation is a practice that is seen as silly and hoaky to this day, but adding talking mouth footage to illustrations by legendary comic book artist Alex Toth- now that's just plain criminal!

(YouTube Link)

2. Clangers (1969-74)-

(Image Link)

Awww, look at the cute little extraterrestrial sock critters! The Clangers are a family of mousey aliens who live on, and inside, a faraway planet. They're called clangers because of the clanging sound made by the trash can lids that cover their burrows, which help protect them from meteor strikes.

They eat Blue String Pudding and soup provided by the Soup Dragon, encounter strange flora and fauna on the planet's surface, and solve problems while under the protection of their dad, Major Clanger. They're cute and, like, totally far out, and if you watch one episode you're sure to fall in love! -Thanks Skipweasel!
