What Kids Really Think of Fathers Day

Comedian Mark Malkoff (previously at Neatorama) asks kids about Fathers Day. It’s a good thing, too, because otherwise, none of these kids would even be aware of it!

(YouTube link)

I can’t figure out which is the best answer, but I think it may be “Your face!” followed by “Poop!” I guess you just have to ask the right questions. Still, the part about going to Disney World and having Dad pay for it was pretty good.  -Thanks, Mark!

Flower Girl Stole the Kiss ... and the Photo!

Photo: Leah Bullard

No wedding photo is complete without "The Kiss," but when photographer Leah Bullard snapped a photograph of the bride and groom kissing, she got a bit more than she expected: the flower girl wanted in on the action, too!

When Anthony Palmer and Michelle Hall of Knoxville, Tennessee, got married last weekend, Michelle's four-year-old daughter Anderson was the flower girl. When Bullard said that she needed the bride and groom to kiss, the little girl "thought I was referring to her, because she thought she was the bride and so naturally she just leaned in for a kiss and kissed that ring bearer!" said Bullard to KFOR.

"Guess what! When momma kissed, Ikey and I kissed!," said Anderson about Ike the ringbearer, "He was the best ring bearer ever! And he thought I was the best flower girl ever! We're best friends"

“Freeze” is One Fierce Softball Team

Look at this fierce team of four- and five-year-old softball players! They play ball in Edmond, Oklahoma, and have a great time together. The only thing these girls love more than playing softball is the movie Frozen. So they named their team Freeze.

One of the moms, Betsy Gregory, is a photographer. She thought it would be a hoot to take team pictures combining the girls’ two interests. Every one of them already had an Elsa costume, so they donned them for the picture. No, they don’t wear their evening gowns for games. However, they do have hats with blond braids attached! Learn more about this adorable team and see more pictures at Buzzfeed.

Calvin And Hobbes Embodied the Voice of the Lonely Child

So many people loved the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes because they related to the small child who lived out his fantasies with his ever-loyal stuffed tiger Hobbes. Of course, Calvin was much more clever than we were at that age. According to Libby Hill, Calvin’s fantasy world was a retreat from the real world he didn’t fit into.

For as much as the brain of a child is growing and changing and maturing, for as many distractions as the world provides to developing minds, kids aren’t stupid, particularly children as highly sensitive and attuned to the world around them as Calvin. Disappearing into his own world is a coping mechanism for dealing with a world that seems to have little patience or place for him. His isolation breeds fantasy, which breeds isolation, which does him no favors at school or at home. To be a lonely child in the world means creating your own fun, your own friends, your own magic.

And we all did that at one time or another, didn’t we? Or were we lonely kids in the minority? Read an essay on the motivation behind Calvin’s childhood fantasies at the A.V. Club.

Toy CT Scanner for a Hospital Waiting Room

(Photo: Creative Arts)

This is really clever! Children can be frightened of the lengthy and uncomfortable process of a CT scan. That's why some hospitals have toy versions in waiting rooms. These can help kids get used to the experience. This particular model by the design firm Creative Arts comes with 3 plush toys. When the child sends a stuffed animal through the scanner, the screen displays cartoon images of the internal organs.

I Wish He Was Four Again

I hear they make teenagers that way so that you don’t mind so much when they leave home. Yet age four isn’t so easy, either. Four is barely out of toddlerhood. Maybe if kids could stay seven years old, with gaps in their teeth and homework a parent can understand... that would be nice. This is the latest comic from Lunarbaboon.

9 Ways Japanese Schools Are Different From American Schools

Japan is known for having extreme work schedules, an extremely strange sense of humor that's  a bit out of sync with their (seemingly) reserved personalities, and they're known for going to extremes to blow off steam. Behind closed doors, of course.

Training to become a "Salaryman" begins at an early age, so as you can imagine going to school in Japan is quite different than it is in America.

If you feel the American educational system is sorely lacking then you won’t be surprised to discover that the Japanese have us beat in many ways, but that intense schooling comes at a price.

(YouTube Link)

Japanese students don't have substitute teachers to harass, they don't have janitors to clean up their messes, and they don't get Saturdays off to play with their pals. Where's the fun in that?

The Doodle Diary Of A New Mom

Being a new parent is a bit like surviving a major catastrophy- you’re always dirty, disheveled and tired, you live in fear of sickness and know that things can get downright nasty in the blink of an eye.

New moms (typically) have a lot more to deal with than daddy, and she must learn to adapt to her new, less fashionable life. But at least she has a tiny alarm clock that will wake her up at all hours of the day and night!

These adorable, yet very (and a bit NSFW) realistic comics by Lucy Scott are part of her book Diary Of A New Mom, which is full of graphic depictions of how having a baby changes a mother's life. At least they'll appreciate all your hard work when they're teenagers!

The Tiny Bake Off

Cooking competition shows are very popular. What could make them even more popular? Have toddlers as contestants! In this cooking show, four kids somewhere between one and two years old try their hand at making cupcakes. Hosts Tobias and Bubber cover the process, which consists mainly of mess making, and judge the final results in an oh-so serious manner.

Image: Flickr: bevgoodwin / Creative Commons

When it comes to a topic such as children saying things and behaving in ways that are inappropriate, the article simply writes itself. So BuzzFeed found when they asked their community of readers to share the most inappropriate things their kids ever did. The following quotes are a sample of the responses they received. Read all of the responses here

“We were getting ready to leave a birthday party and went up to the mother of the birthday child to thank her for inviting us. My 2-year-old son slapped her butt and said, ‘Thanks for the cake, babe.’ That’s how his father thanks me for dinner and apparently he thought it was just how you thank people for food.”

—Tracy Mattea Grimes, Facebook7

“After my son learned what made boys and girls different, he started introducing himself to random people thusly: ‘Hi, I’m John, and I do NOT have a vagina.’”

“My mom says that when I was little we were waiting for a train when a group of nuns sat down on the bench opposite us. I pointed at them and screamed, ‘Mommy! Look at the witches!! Look Mommy!! Witches!!!’”

—Laura Adler, Facebook

“My 3-year-old son told an older lady at the hair salon that he had a big penis.”
