Mother Slaps 13-Month Old Child On Plane

A Mother allegedly slapped her crying 13-month old baby across the face during a flight to New Mexico.  A flight attendant took temporary custody of the child.
The flight attendant did return the child to its parents before the plane landed. Police then took the child into their custody at the gate and performed a welfare check. After police questioned the couple, the flight attendant and other witnesses, the child was returned the parents. The parents were not cited for the incident.

My father once witnessed a pair of young woman in a restaurant taking turns slapping a little kid. Everybody in the restaurant wanted to do something, but everybody, including my dad, was afraid of getting arrested. Sadly, he wasn't being paranoid. Another time, he witnessed some parents leave two little kids on the side of a busy street while they went through a car wash. This time, he had access to a phone and called the police, but they refused to do anything. They told him that unless the kids got hit by a car, it wasn't their business. Gee, do you think they would have "minded their own business" if he tried to intervene? He would probably have been arrested for interfering with the parents' "rights". Apparently, the US government has a hard time telling the difference between parenthood and child slavery.

I don't know what to think of this story. As a parent I would be a little more than upset if a flight attendant took my child away from me on an airplane! But then again I've never slapped my child in the face. In any circumstance I wouldn't exactly consider it the flight attendants duty to take a child, maybe alert police and intervene with the parents, but not remove a child from their parents. My husband once witnessed a woman verbally abusing a child and told her "if you don't want him I'll take him". He said the woman hugged her child and looked as though she regretted her words. So maybe a little talk with the parents would have diffused the situation without escalating, like I'm sure taking the child away did.

I can't believe advertisers actually think this kind of thing works. It's only more likely to make me HATE the product they advertise in this way. Totinos and French's taste like salted cardboard anyway. Why would anyone buy this garbage?
