Alex Eben Meyer

By Alex Eben Meyer: hi, i am an illustrator living and working in sunny greenpoint brooklyn, an area of nyc which is fast turning into a weed garden of illustrators (hell, my studio is in an old pencil factory (yeah i know, illustrator, pencil factory, it's a bit obvious, but the space and the people are great). in my work, i strive for accessibility, humor and fun. i want viewers to smile and enjoy, and then look for the greater details, thinking and occasional snark. i'm not really one for grandiose artist statements, i'd rather have you look, and enjoy.

hp artist series wallpapers: hp approached me to be involved in their artist series of backgrounds for the 2010 hp laptop series. i have a great fondness for sketchbooks and drawing in coffee shops (see below) and they were looking for that feeling of experimentation and energy for these backgrounds.

kit cars: an illustration about the pride kit-car owners take in building
their cars. here, i went back in time, thinking of plastic model kits,
this one including the driver as well.

the real world: a series of illustrations for a sociology textbook. the
cover and all the interior pieces for this textbook are about people.
people in different places, people in different situations, dealing with
people, people. as you may have guessed, i drew a lot of people.

easy iphone: living on the fringe of tech society, jailbreakers are rebels
and so are their iphones.

26 perfect saturdays: a series about perfect saturday activities in and
around seattle. this day included classic airplanes, underground cities,
bourbon and pancakes. sounds like a hell of a day to me.

15 uses for newsprint: in speaking of the pencil factory, a bunch of
the illustrators (and a couple of graphic designers too) got together
to send out a promotional mailer, where we each did a newsprint poster,
my fondness for drawing trees and woodgrain was certainly not out of place
for this.

robot: t-shirt design, just for the fun of drawing robots and abstract
patterns.

sketchbook: it's easy to spend too much time staring at a computer, so
i try to get out and draw whenever possible. i am a big advocate of sketchbooks
and i feel that doodling, drawing from life, and just making a mess on
paper is a great way for me to explore ideas and styles. the correlation
isn't always obvious, but it's there. the above is drawing out a window
from a local coffee shop.

sketchbook: tape, doodling and some collage. yup.

sketchbook: to close, i'll throw at you a meat grinder and potato stamps.
please don't attempt to look for meaning in this one. thanks for looking.

Contact Info: feel free to contact me about illustration,
projects, chatter, what have you.
