Marie Exceeded Expectations

Ethel Marie Dillow married Glen Gifford Pendergraft in 1928. Glen died in 1965. Marie outlived him by quite a few years and died in... wait, when did she die? You might have to do some math to figure out that she died in 2008. This gravestone tells a story about the way we think of time. The stone was most likely erected in 1965. Back then, the 21st century seemed far away. As a kid, I thought about how very old I would be when the year 2000 rolled in. I'd be 41! At any rate, carving on a tombstone is easier and less expensive at the monument shop than in a cemetery, so Marie apparently had her death year pre-carved to begin with a 19. She didn't consider the possibility that she would live into the 21st century, but then she lived to the age of 98. Her survivors did what they could to make the gravestone accurate, even though they had to pay a premium for more characters to be carved on-site. The contrast in the black-and-white photo above may lead you to suspect Photoshop, but the images at Find-a-Grave make it clear that the gravestone is real.

I still remember somewhere around the 4th grade I said to my friends how we'll still be alive in the year 2000. They mocked me, which is probably the reason I still remember.

Intriguing, but not the entire explanation. Not everyone in that situation turned out to be a serial killer.
Exactly right, think about how many people were born during wartime, or had messed up parents - who never murdered anyone. It must be 99%. Though, I can't say wartime birth isn't a factor at all. Another factor I was going to mention is social media, and how connected we are now. Between 1970 and 2000, people had no mobile phones, internet was slow, and almost no social media. So not only could people not shame you for any bad actions, but people couldn't monitor you either. You could get away with a lot more I would think.

I would hardly say "the era of serial killers has petered out." Trump has a body count of 450,000 and still rising. If anything, 2021 is on track to be a heyday for serial killers.

I also wonder if it is easier to catch people today before they become serial killers because of how common it is to see these people in chat groups, message boards, and just online. We put a lot more of our selves out there and it makes it harder to be invisible.

I read the article and found it interesting. Just shows that every situation is complex and it is hard to pinpoint any one reason to explain a situation, especially when it comes to something as diverse as humans.
