Dog Intently Listens to Squirrel Story

Lauren Blumenthal told a story to her dog Hazel about a squirrel carrying a bone in its mouth. The story contained many words that Hazel was very familiar with, and upon hearing the word “squirrel”, Hazel dropped the ball that was in her mouth.

Who knew dogs could listen to our stories with enthusiasm if they knew the words?

I think the word squirrel, with that scritchy sound in there, excites dogs. Even those who do not know what a squirrel is. My lab is 3 yo and he has seen squirrels but always in the "leave it" context and never the word squirrel. But he happened to eavesdrop on a conversation and heard us discussing the cussed li'l monsters taking the whole almond crop this year. When he heard the word squirrel his ears pricked up and his head tilted.
