Change is definitely costly, right? I admire the willingness of Berkeley City Council to spend money in order to amend its municipal code to excise gender-specific terms in favor of gender neutral ones - this includes changing “manhole” to “maintenancehole”.
Quite long compared to the original, right? The name-changing costs the city approximately $600. This proposal was first introduced by Council member Rigel Robinson on March. It was last Tuesday when the Berkeley City Council voted for this to proceed.
A city staff memo included in the paperwork for the vote notes that “in recent years, broadening societal awareness of transgender and gender-nonconforming identities has brought to light the importance of non-binary gender inclusivity. Therefore, it is both timely and necessary to make the environment of City Hall and the language of city legislation consistent with the principles of inclusion.”

If a word-change is enough to throw you so far off balance that you're irrational, perhaps the planet would be a better place without you. There are no delusional fantasies here. Our language is a constantly evolving thing -- and making single-sex labels more accurate in the 21st century is not that big of a deal. This isn't anything new. It's been going on for some 40 years! It's why we say flight attendant now, not stewardess and most Thirty-somethings have grown up saying fire fighter, not fireman. Manhole is a ridiculous name. It doesn't even describe what it is accurately! It's a hole for all men? No, it's a hole for maintenance access. The new name is far superior. Similarly, the name for our species SHOULD be humankind, not mankind. That's just more accurate. So, how about you get a grip? Why is it that it's always the conservatives who are having meltdowns but they call other people snowflakes? Projection I guess.

How bout just M-Hole instead of Maintenancehole? In 2019 people abbreviate/slang everything anyway. Soon as it's renamed as maintenancehole, zoomers will shorten it. Or maybe instead of maintenancehole just an emoji of a metal hole.

The list also suggests to replace "Pregnant” (woman, women)" by “Pregnant employees”.. ..which i consider a little confusing... Pregnancy or gestation, is the time during which one or more offspring develops inside a woman (human female). That is, if someone is pregnant, this is also a sufficient criterion to determine this person as "women" in the biological sense. Even Thomas Beatie does not change this fact.
