RIP George, the Snail

Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources recently announced the sad demise of a snail. His name was George and he was the last surviving member of the land snail species the called Achatinella apexfulva.

Hawaii once used to be the home of a fantastically diverse group of mollusks but all this is changing now as many species are going extinct all around the world.

As for George, he did lead a full life and lived up to a ripe age of 14 years thanks to the care of the department of Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Julia Jacobs recounts how the late George got his name and why we should care about preservation of species.
