Crossing the English Channel in a Flying Car

Entrepreneur Jerome Dauffy wanted to build a flying machine that could travel around the world in 80 days. He might not be there just yet, but he designed a flying car he calls Pegasus that resembles a dune buggy crossed with a paraglider.

On Wednesday, pilot Bruno Vezzoli took off from Calais, France, and flew it to Dover, England, across the English Channel. The 36-mile flight came off without a hitch! Read more about the stunt here.  -via Nag on the Lake

This phenomenon is due to the difference in temperature of the two bodies of water. The same thing happens in the Straits of Gibraltar as the shallower Mediterranean is warmer than the Atlantic . The warm water flows out of the Med. at a higher level than the cold water flowing in from the Atlantic. During WW2 this phenomenon allowed submarines to move through the Straits without using their engines, thus avoiding detection. Closer to the surface to leave the Med.; lower to enter.
