The Haunting Case of the Gibbons Twins

Brigette and Paula Powers of Australia may be eerily alike and strangely dependent on each other, but they don’t hold a candle to June and Jennifer Gibbons. Born in 1963, the Gibbons twins also had oddly synchronous lives. In fact, until they went to school, they didn’t speak to anyone but each other, and only in their own made-up language. They spent their teen years secluded in their bedroom in Wales, writing literature.

It was on the blank page that June and Jennifer revealed the darkness of their bond, exploring the joint need and hatred they felt toward one another. June wrote, “Nobody suffers the way I do, not with a sister; with a husband, yes; with a wife, yes; with a child, yes, but this sister of mine, a dark shadow robbing me of sunlight, is my one and only torment.”

Born 10 minutes apart, Jennifer viewed her older sibling as mightier in every way—looks, brains, wits. For her part, June sensed the envy, writing, “She wants us to be equal. There is a murderous gleam in her eye. Dear lord, I am scared of her. She is not normal … someone is driving her insane. It is me.”

But the weirdest thing anyone knew about the Gibbons sisters is that they made the decision that one of them would have to die to free the other. And somehow they made it happen. Read that story at The Lineup.  -via Digg
