Why is This So Expensive in Your State?

Improvenet used Google search’s autocomplete feature to make several maps about the United States. The map above was generated using the question “Why is ___ so expensive in [state]?” As you can see, the most common answer is gasoline. It’s expensive in a lot of states. Then there are things you just have to wonder about. Why is liquor expensive in Alabama, while milk is higher in Louisiana? You might find the answers at The Daily Dot, where they give us explanations for the price discrepancies.

Why is car insurance so expensive in the Bluegrass state? Not only is Kentucky the third most expensive state in the nation for car insurance, Louisville is the eighth most expensive city. Local news outlet WDRB reported that the pricey auto insurance rates are due to Kentucky being a "no fault" state for car accident liability.

"If you're in a vehicle accident in Kentucky, your insurance picks up the first $10,000 of your medical bills whether you were at fault or not," explained Louisville Kentucky Insurance agent David Cronin to WDRB.

And here I thought it was because we have three teenage drivers and five vehicles. No wonder my credit cards are groaning. Anybody want to buy an old car?

Well, they got Louisiana correct. When I moved down here 7 yrs ago milk was going between $4.50 and $6.50 a gallon depending on where I shopped. Having previously lived in Michigan the price of milk was $2.50. Pretty big difference. PLUS Louisiana has 10% sales tax on everything. In Michigan tax is 6% and food isn't taxed unless it's been prepared. For one of the 'poorest' states in America I would love to know what they are doing with all that tax money down here.

Lining the pockets of the politicians, probably. Here, electricity's ridiculous because it's because it's a desert, it's 120 degrees for 3-5 months of the year, and the power company knows they can get it. Even though you'd think taking advantage of solar means it'd be basically free... somehow just the opposite seems to happen.
