The Geography of NFL Fandom

NFL football fans can "like" teams on Facebook. That company produced this map showing which teams were liked more than any others in a county. You can see a larger version here.

It's interesting that the Raiders are still popular in Los Angeles, though they are now in Oakland. There's also a big swath of Cowboy country in Nevada. One county in central Missouri also has a lot of fans of the Dallas Cowboys. That looks like Pulaski County, if I'm reading the map correctly.

I would like to note that the depiction of Alabama is misleading. The state doesn't belong to the New Orleans Saints, but the Crimson Tide and the Tigers--college football teams.

Quite interesting if you pay attention to the team moves. Los Angeles used-to have the Raiders and the Rams. Now, the LA area is full of Raiders fans. Meanwhile the Oakland area where they're now playing, is full of 49ers fans... Ouch. Meanwhile, nobody in LA is a fan of the Rams any more... Ouch. Sounds like the Raiders should seriously consider moving back down south.

Yes, I moved from L.A. to San Luis Obispo County (up the coast 'tween L.A. and S.F.) a few years after the Rams moved to St. Louis. I halfway expected a cadre of Rams loyalists here, since San Luis IS Spanish for St. Louis, but by then, the love had migrated to the Raiders, since then to be replaced by the 49ers as the Raiders' reputations as 'the bad boys of the NFL' faded into vague memory. Remember that? When the Cowboys were "America's Team", the Oakland Raiders were "Counterculture America's Team". At least they didn't do what a majority of teams named "Raiders" do (according to a recent survey): use a Native American warrior as a mascot.
