Runners on Parade

Chicago had bulls, Cincinnati had pigs, and Lexington had horses. Now Manchester, Connecticut has launched a town-wide art show featuring sculptures of runners. The exhibit is called Runners on Parade, and it has 12 sculptures of runners from different artists installed on Main Street.

The inspiration for the runners’ parade came from Tris Carta, president of the Manchester Road Race, a major sponsor of the sculptures. A year ago, a recently formed Imagine Main Street committee seized his idea, and ran with it, raising additional funds and organizing a public competition among local artists.

“We’ve received very positive feedback about the sculptures,” says Steve Gates, president of the committee and also a 45-time Manchester finisher. “People look forward to visiting the downtown, and the more art and culture we can give them, the more reasons they have to come.”

The 12 runner sculptures include five men, five women, and two androgynous figures. The most outlandish of the group is an 8-foot tall "Manchester Cacophonous,” with antelope feet and horns, but zebra and giraffe parts in between.

They are using runners because Manchester holds the annual Manchester Road Race on Thanksgiving Day, which draws 15,000 runners each year. The Runners on Parade exhibit will last at least three months. -via reddit

That's clearly a commentary of how people in modern society run away from their civic responsibilities of maintaining equal rights for giraffes, zebras, and humans alike. Clearly.
