Ten Offensive Ads From The Last Ten Years

If you think advertisers are done putting out ads which are offensive, featuring racism, sexism, and a general disregard for the standards set in place to avoid turning consumers off to their product, think again, because poorly conceived and totally offensive ads are still rolling out of ad agencies from around the world.

In the last ten years companies like Nike, Groupon and even some government agencies have been releasing insensitive ads that will make you wonder what the heck they were thinking when they made the poor decision to run these ads.

This 2006 ad from the Tokyo Metro Government about earthquake safety shows that some ad agencies haven't moved past the use of racist Little Black Sambo style characters in advertising:

In this case the black caricature characters are meant to represent bumbling Americans who are shown the "right way" by the smarter white Americans, but they must have known it wouldn't fly because they subsequently edited the images so they feature only white American and Asian characters.

And then there's this Groupon ad which essentially belittles the plight of the Tibetan people:

Wow, the doctor gives shots himself? No doctor has ever given our kids a shot; they're always long gone and it's always a nurse's responsibility.

We're fortunate that our two boys have very thick, dense thighs, so when they get shots they only cry for about 10 seconds, mostly from the fear of being held down on the exam table.

I'll have to remember to throw tissues in my kids' faces if I need to get their attention.
