A Visual Effects Breakdown Of Only God Forgives

(Video Link)

Watching a visual effects breakdown is kinda like watching a beloved film being deconstructed right before your eyes, with all the magic stripped away in favor of clinical examination of process and point-by-point examples of what was done to the original footage to create the desired effect.

VFX supervisor Martin Madsen presents us with an enlightening, and totally bloodsoaked, analysis of the visual effects used in Nicolas Winding Refn's film Only God Forgives, and if your stomach can stand the ultraviolence you'll discover an interesting display of how much work goes into a modern movie, and the detail oriented nature of the viz fx industry.

Maybe a warning in the description would be good. This is a really gruesome set of clips. Not for kids!
I didn't realize that they edit out the dolly tracks, etc. The FX guys don't have to be careful with angles and such anymore. they can leave all this stuff out in the open and remove them in post-production.

A Petit's Tourniquet used for maladies such as snakebites, blood loss or congestive heart failure. Most uses for this are now rendered quaint by more modern medical treatments.

Down here in the south, we have an expression that people use when they're suffering from various and sundry ailments and disorders: "I've got a hitch in my getalong."

This is an actual Getalong Hitch Adjusting Device.

It's a coal miner's safety hatband, worn over a hardhat. Before the advent of caged canaries to discover poisonous gases in mines, miners used to use a particular kind of cheese which turned green when exposed to various chemicals. The screw on the cheese-holder allowed a miner to adjust the cheese so it was visible beyond the hat's brim.

This is a 19th century artificial insemination device for kangaroos. It looks a little odd because kangaroos have forked, uh, insemination organs. (seriously, look it up!) The inseminator would load the brass tube with the, uh, genetic material, then strap the device to his pelvis and, uh, endear himself to the female kangaroo. Approximately 2.3 minutes later, the female roo was preggers, and the inseminator was smoking a cigarette.

I believe it is a gas cylinder bottle restraining strap to secure an upright bottle to a wall. Welding bottles are secured to a roll around cart. The bottle could also be used in a lab to secure to supply exotic gases.
