Smiley Face Screws

There are many different screw head types, most of which were developed with some practical goal in mind. Yuma Kano’s design, however, is just for fun. Screw is a collaborative project between him and Komura Seisakusho, a screw factory in Japan. His screws are, he claims, “a product that can bring joy.” I’d bet that’s true if you’re taking something apart and didn’t anticipate one of these beauties appearing.

This could be a clever way to make cash. After all, using smiley face screws would necessitate purchasing bits and drivers that can move them. Kano would do well to make the screws cheap and the screwdrivers expensive.

The idea of making weird-shaped screw heads and expensive screwdrivers is pretty much what every electronic devices company does to protect their proprietary hardware (usually supplemented by hiding them behind "warranty void if removed"stickers). Seeing a smiley-faced one when opening up an xbox may cheer you up, but is more likely to make you feel like you're being trolled ;-)
