Antarctica Condition 1 Weather

(Video Link)

We're having a cold snap down here in Texas. It's gotten as low as 50ºF! Brrr. We'll survive though.

Now in Antarctica, they've got it really rough. Here's a video from McMurdo Station, the main American research center in Antarctica. It's a 2006 video showing what the weather is like in what the natives call "Condition 1." That's when the wind speed exceeds 55 knots, visibility is less than 100 feet or the wind chill temperature is below -100ºF. Rather nippy.

The temperature in Winnipeg the other day was colder than both the north and south poles. The wind chill was -52C (-62F). Here in Ottawa it was much warmer, wind chill was only -40.

That's them! They've taken about 10 years of footage and put it together in a feature-length film that is making its way across the country right now. They've got all sorts of his signature time lapse stuff, and talk about what it is like to winter over.

I can see why the 1596 toilet was rejected by the general public. You'd have to haul water in and haul water out along with the waste. That's fine if you're the queen and have plenty of servants, but not so great for the rest of us. Modern plumbing is a blessing.
