Animating the AT-ATs

Award-winning special effects artist Dennis Muren tells us how Industrial Light & Magic made the Imperial Walkers in The Empire Strikes Back actually walk, while we see a time-lapse video of the work. They used stop-motion animation, which means a day of work like this would yield about five seconds of usable footage for the Battle of Hoth. I wonder how much faster it is using computer animation? Or is it just a case of having many people working a scene at the same time? I really miss the old stop motion and miniature work in movies. It was less obvious where the real ended and the magic began.
