Top 10 Most Read Books In The World

Illustration: Jared Fanning

I had an inclination that The Bible would be number one, but I had no idea by how much. I think it is a little skewed because of the chosen statistics. For one, it is over the last 50 years - which is a long span of time. The first Harry Potter book wasn't published until 1997. The Da Vinci Code was published in 2003. I will not bother to look up Twilight. Ew, Twilight. Also this is based on books sold, I am sure The Bible does a whole lot of selling to churches and what not.

I would love to see this with just the last 10-12 years. I am not sure what other metric could be used besides sales but it would be worth looking into.

This is not 'most read' it is 'most sold'. I'd be interested to see figures showing which books have been read in their entirety - the list would be very different. How many people have actually read the whole Bible, cover to cover, for example?

As CamilleR says, I'm also not sure that an entry for 'Harry Potter' counts as 'a book', rather it's a series of books, as is LOTR, Twilight, etc.

Give it 10 more years and '50 Shades of Grey' will have edged out Anne Frank, mark my words. All hope it lost!

I understand The Twilight Saga includes all books in the series....I would assume the same for Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. What about The Da Vinci Code...are they including Angels and Demons & The Lost Symbol...each a part of the "Robert Langdon" series of Dan Brown books.

I agree with previous posts on that books within series should be split up.

easy enough to find yearly sales stats, the bible is number one in sales every year in recent history and continues to rise. that being said, it would be a fair assumption that it is read also. why buy it if you not going to read it? many people die and/or are imprisoned for just owning a bible, why risk that if your not going to read it?
