Looks ice cold, doesn't it? Actually, the water is quite warm at the Pamukkale terraces in Turkey. The white formations are deposits of minerals from spring water that built up into a series of dams, making the terraced pools what they are. That process is typical of the eight places featured in this list, although the geography and minerals (and therefore the appearance) of the terraces varies. The pictures are gorgeous! The first known photograph of a person is from 1838, by Joseph-Louis Daguerre. It is of the Boulevard du Temple in Paris, and shows a street scene devoid of people except for an unknown gentleman standing and having his shoes shined. He was the only one in the scene standing still long enough to be captured by the nearly 10-minute exposure.
