Garbage Disposal in a Volcano

[YouTube Clip by Richard Roscoe of Photovolcanica]

Campers in Ethopia threw a bag of garbage into a volcanic crater to see what would happen. The bag broke through the thin crust covering a pool of magma and allowed the lava to spew out. And, of course, the garbage was incinerated. No word on whether they were fined for littering. -via reddit

Actually, this is something Hollywood FX specialists should pay attention to. When Gollum landed in the lava, for example, the effect would be pretty similar: >30kg of organic matter, violent reaction as the water vaporises - a very painful but quick death I would suspect.

@Ratz - I think the resulting eruption was due to the surface being broken. Kind of like creme brûlée. You break the crust in that and the cream starts to come up.

Holy cow, I'd no idea it would be that vigorous. It would be kinda embarrassing to destroy a whole town just because you threw two bags of garbage in.
