How Toy Story 2 Was Almost Lost Forever

(Video Link)

While Toy Story 2 was in production, someone at Pixar accidentally typed in a command that erased the drives on which the animation files were stored. Most of the film vanished in 20 seconds.

A whole year of work. Just...gone.

This is the story of how Pixar employees rescued the movie.

I used to work for an internet service provider that was so cheap they did not do backups. One of the hardest things I had to do there was after a webmail server crash - a woman was in tears after she found out 3 years of heartfelt email and pictures of her recently dead mother were not recoverable and gone forever. I hope they think the $500 they saved was worth it.

Backups are great if your company does them. I work for a company that has a very large database system that covers finance and HR. We do not have a backup system. We are in a hurricane prone area. We have tornados from time to time. We tell our bosses every year, especially at the beginning of hurricane season, that we need a way to back up the system offsite. They ignore us every time. "Too much cost. Too much effort. Stop talking to us about this stuff. Who are you? Why are you in my bedroom in the middle of the night? I am calling the police." One of these days we are going to have a disaster and lose years of data and these guys will act like it is the end of the world. When that happens I will be expected to magically recover everything from soggy servers. They will have to at least lift the restraining order, that is all I have to say.

They grabbed the dailly onsite backup, told everyone to go get coffee for the next ten minutes, and then resumed work as if the morning had never happened.
