Taiwan's Musical Garbage Trucks

(Video Link)

Oddity Central reports that Taiwan's garbage trucks commonly play music in order to alert people of their arrival in a neighborhood. Among the more popular tunes is Beethoven's "Für Elise." They often switch to thematic songs during Christmas and the Chinese New Year. Which songs do you think would be ideal for garbage trucks?

I am stunned at the small amounts of trash people are carrying. That would never happen in America - everybody would get hernias from their wastefulness.

My Rotary Club used to work very hard to buy used trash trucks and send them to rural towns in Mexico.

Sanitary trash removal can be a major health initiative. In the States, we take for granted that mail delivery is secure and reliable. It is generally the same for trash removal, but that is less well respected.

I lived in Tainan in the seventies and remember the musical garbage trucks. :-)

Japanese garbage trucks play music as well--helps warn people the truck is on its way (you were not allowed to leave your trash outside the night before). I remember more than once having to throw on a robe and dash outside with my trash bags when the truck arrived early.

I used to live on the top floor of an old apartment building with no elevator and sound announced the start of my morning exercise as I grabbed some clothes and ran down the narrow stairs hoping that the truck hadn't go too far down the road. Now it just means that I have to be extra careful driving to avoid all the people focused on getting their garbage to the truck - the joys of living in a Taiwanese city with no sidewalks.

Interestingly some cities have tried using the trucks to teach English , the only footage I can find is on this blog

Searching for the footage I came across musical garbage trucks in Japan, and Mongolia
