Competitive Snowball Fighting

In Japan, snowball fighting isn't just a pleasant winter pastime. It's a serious competitive sport known as Yukigassen or "snow battle." Two teams square off on a field about the size of a hockey rink. Victory comes through annihilating the other team or capturing its flag. See more photos and a video at the link. This particular photo, I should note, is from a match in Alaska, not Japan.

Where I come from snowball fights are always competitive. However they are not an organized sport. There's one thing you can gaurantee will take the fun out of almost any pastime it is to turn it into an organized sport.

Just to clarify: This may be a Japanese "sport" but this photo is of the snowball fight in Anchorage, Alaska (yes, part of the USA) during Fur Rendezvous (also called Fur Rondy, or just Rondy, by locals). Hence the "Rondy" sign in the photo.

Must be dncucf never got smacked in the face with a well placed hard packed snowball with a chunk of icicle inside. Someone told me it hurts like hell and can bloody your nose.

@Jim you're damned right it can hurt. It might come of the ground as snow, but packed hard it's ice and it will hurt like hell if you get one in the face.

Snow fights round here are, as I said, competitive and the competition is usually about gaining ground. If you can drive your opposition past a given line you've won. So you make damned sure your snowballs are going to hurt. If they don't hurt the enemy will not retreat.
