Coupled Married for 72 Years Dies While Holding Hands

Gordon and Norma Yeager, aged 94 and 90 respectively, were married for 72 years. They were inseparable and deeply in love with each other during those seven decades. They died an hour apart last week in a hospital. There was some confusion when Gordon left because his heart monitor continued to pulse -- but that was because he was holding hands with Norma. Her heartbeat could be felt through his body:

"It was really strange, they were holding hands, and dad stopped breathing but I couldn't figure out what was going on because the heart monitor was still going," said Dennis Yeager. "But we were like, he isn't breathing. How does he still have a heart beat? The nurse checked and said that's because they were holding hands and it's going through them. Her heart was beating through him and picking it up."

"They were still getting her heartbeat through him," said Donna Sheets.

At 4:38 p.m., exactly one hour after Gordon died, Norma passed too.

I had the pleasure of personally knowing the couple in this article during their last years. It was also the most amazing thing!

Unfortunately this article is glossing over the fact that the older gentleman had refused to give up his license and caused the accident. He'd even been pending having his license revoked. There was also a couple in the other car and both were hospitalized, one with a broken neck and internal bleeding. It seems that most articles are removing the more unpleasant bits of the story. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/44960859/ns/today-today_health/t/couple-married-years-die-holding-hands/#.TqLgKptFudA

It is sweet that they were together so long and were able to 'go out' together. Not so sweet the whys and hows. :(

Thanks for the update, V.N. In other words, they died together as a direct result of his negligence. Instead of being a warning to others his age to accept reality and give up endangering your lives and others, it becomes a sugary-sweet fairy tale romance ending.

Except of course for the 64-yr-old woman with the broken neck.

Just wow. That is incredibly sad. I clicked through this story as it sounded so sweet that would "choose" to die together like that. Kind of reminded me of "Bicentennal Man".

Then the accident that caused their deaths - just so very sad.

This is a tragic story in how it went down, but it's still beautiful. How can you say that this older man was a moron or a jerk for refusing to give up his license. Where you there every second of the day when they need food, medicine, and plainly wanted to go out with each other? No! Who wants to go to a nursing home either? They suck even the best ones in the world... Been there seen a lot!! To all those who don't understand the process of geriatrics one day you will because we all eventually get old our selfs.
