The Oinkster Restaurant in Eagle Rock, California recently implemented an interesting marketing ploy. Instead of traditional paper coupons, they commissioned 2nd Wind to cut wooden burger nickles out of red oak using their laser cutters. They wil get you half off a regular priced burgerĀ and can be used again and again in what's probably the greenest coupon ever.

A restaurant in my town gives out these same type of wooden tokens or coins for a free glass of wine every time you come in basically. Same concept.

A clothing store I used to work in had a small supply of coupons like these that were for a nearby restaurant. The restaurant gave them to us in case any tourists came in asking us where to eat lunch, but I never had the chance to give one out. I was always under the impression that it was made from wood so it couldn't be replicated.

Actually there was a store here in Tampa called "The Wooden Nickle" which was a combo head shop/comic/adult/magazine/trinket store. They used wooden nickle coins in the 80's.

They aren't used all that often now, but wooden nickels as coupons or tokens are definitely not a new idea...
