People Staring at Computers

An artist wondered “How do computers see us?” To figure it out he set up computers in stores around NYC to capture people staring at computers. See the fun video and gallery at the link.

He also did not get permission to take pictures of these people and then put them up on the internet. That just smacks of creepy to me. What about model release forms to use these people in his 'exhibit'? I guess I'm less upset about the computer fraud than the privacy violation.

@Vonskippy

If you are taking a jab at the Niqab:

So, if you fear God, do not be too complaisant in your speech, lest the lecherous-hearted should lust after you. Talk with such people in plain and simple words. Abide still in your homes and do not display your finery as women used to do in the days of ignorance.[Qur'an 33:32–33]

That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. [Qur'an 33:59]

More to the point; the psychology of it. Women are mostly valuated by their looks, whether the valuation is coming from a man or woman. Men lust after women and judge them based on their appearances. Even if men do not explicitly abuse a woman, they will implicitly adjust their behavior according to how attracted or repulsed they are to a woman's appearance. Consider that beautiful people are less likely to be convicted of a crime (neaotrama post). That's just one of the many ways in which appearances distort judgments.

The reason for wearing a niqab should therefor be obvious, is it fear? or concern for something actually real? It is convenient for us in the west, who like our sexually explicit material, we love our lust, and our beautiful women, to have our women bare. But it is only convenient for our lust and not for justice or mutual respect, we are deficient when it comes to good values. We focus on lasciviousness and self-indulgence. With the consequence of increased anxiety and mental illness.

Like those former days of ignorance... You are probably too young to remember them.

Just watched a video the other day of a teen girl going insane smearing make-up all over her face, gyrating her hips, dumping beer on her face and shouting "You like me now class? Am I hot enough for you?" It isn't the first time I've seen this, and it won't be the last as long as our societies continue to focus on appearances and satisfying our lusts. I don't know why we can't admit it; we can't handle wearing modest clothing, we can't handle covering ourselves up. We certainly couldn't live like the Amish and all wear the same hat and slacks, we pine to be different, to be unique, and our society allows it to happen, if we were more like Islam or Amish communities, we'd come face to face with our incessant need to stand out and be appreciated as individuals, which conversely means our values are selfish.

@factoid>> thanks for the ironic name. The secret service investigates cyber crimes. The man installed software on computers in an apple store without permission.

This was indeed creepy, but lets not even begin this nonsense about an invasion of privacy, there is no privacy outside of a private place. This crime is about the entire computer issue.

"Were you aware that Apple loosed the Secret Service on the artist? "

Yes, and I'm glad they did. What he did was (as someone else mentioned) a blatant privacy violation. He basically installed spyware on computers in the Apple stores and used them to surreptitiously take pictures of people. In short, your privacy doesn't mean shit to him and he doesn't have any qualms about using it to further his personal ambitions. I hope he gets a year in jail for this.

*points* What Greyman said.
All of the privacy stuff aside.... the photos really aren't interesting.
Most of the people look bored, depressed or stressed.

This is stupid. If you've ever seen a webcam feed, this is what it looks like (except most people on webcam have consented to being on webcam.)
