Go The F’ To Sleep, Not Funny?

By now you have probably heard of the parody of children’s books “Go The F’ To Sleep.” However not everyone is laughing.

Go the F*** to Sleep" is being hailed as a cathartic children's book for parents. Beautifully illustrated and written in the same witty prose style as generations of beloved bedtime storybooks, this read has made a startling climb to the No. 1 spot on Amazon and as a New York Times Bestseller.

Who can explain it?

As the title suggests, "Go the F*** to Sleep" mocks the parental frustrations of trying to lay a child down to bed. Crass in concept and execution, this is an expletive-filled bedtime story intended solely for the amusement of parents.

Joan Demarest is an attorney in Corvallis, Oregon, and the mother of three young boys. Demarest told me that initially she thought the book was funny. That was before she read it. "Now I find it unsettling. I don't like violent language in association with children."

Nothing to get excited about, either way. I didn't find it offensive, but I didn't find it that humorous either. Its a kind of vulgar humor which I'm not particularly attracted to.

Isn't it better that parents relieve their frustrations with their larva via reading a book and laughing about than you know actually speaking that way to a child? What a humorless crab.

Maybe some commenters should read the original article.

"The violent language of "Go the F*** to Sleep" is not the least bit funny, when one considers how many neglected children fall asleep each night praying for a parent who'd care enough to hold them, nurture them and read to them."

Is basically all she's saying.

Best part is the false equivalency of the whole "what if you told Jews or Latinos to go the f*** to sleep" section. It's almost like someone writing a parody of namby-pambyism, but sadly it is not.

The unfortunate thing is, from what I've gleaned the reviewer has written a lot of good and useful stuff, but now she's The Humorless Twit Who Wrote That Bunk on CNN. Given how viral this story's gone, it's a prime case study on how to poop all over your own reputation.

Ever notice when it comes to humor, people especially do not want to be corrected or shown to be flawed morally. "It's all in good fun", "We are just having fun", "Spoil-sport!" etc.. I'm not saying that is specifically the case here, but I've seen for everything from racial prejudice to school-yard bullying.

Actually, Ryan S, I've seen many more examples of people claiming that because they didn't find something funny, it is therefore Not Funny At All And You're A Deviant If You Disagree. Usually with regard to offensive and/or satirical humor, and GTFTS is both. So it's unsurprising that some would pooh-pooh it in that way.

It is indeed no surprise that she get's criticism for criticizing this book, but it seems to me a lot of people are missing the point she was trying to make.

I don't personally care one way or the other about this book.

About humor that can be crass or offensive: watch some Louis C.K. Some will like it, some will hate it.

@Ryan S

That's true, but at the same time there will always, ALWAYS be vocal detractors of anything you could possibly imagine.

Adorable YouTube videos of kids putting a hat on their sleeping dog? You can bet that there will be accusations of animal cruelty nestled somewhere in the comments.

If people are genuinely unable to separate the humor in this book from the way that responsible parents should be treating their children, I think there's a more significant, bigger-picture problem with society that needs to be addressed before we start crusading against this one book.

The woman is a humorless toad. If you don't like the book, don't read it. She's clearly implying that the book and (by extension) those that find it funny condone violence towards children. It's a charge that is simultaneously simple-minded and cheap, which leads me to believe she must be a Fox News viewer.

@hmmm... I like Louis CK but that's because he is picking on common sense stupidity. Virtually all of his jokes are from a fairly enlightened perspective on the human condition. He's not just going for the laugh, but it is also thought-provoking. Still, to some extent I'm turned off by his excessive vulgarity.

@Natey You have a point there, I do not think people generally act out of reason, but generally react emotionally, so it is probable that there will be such detractors even of benneficial endeavours.

"A man will rip off your arm and throw it into a river, but he will leave you as a human being intact. He won't mess with who you are. Women are non-violent but they will shit inside of your heart." - Louis CK

When I was an extremely tired mom of a colicky infant, my lullaby was a little different than most moms. To the tune of Brahms lullaby, I sang "Go to sleep, little creep, I am tired and sleepy. Go to sleep, little creep, or mommy will weep." Did that mean that I didn't love my beautiful baby girl? No! It meant that I was tired, and found a humorous way of dealing with it. My daughter, now 26, laughs about it now, and there was no long term damage done. Granted, the language used in this book wasn't used in my song, but I truly understand the frustration.

I work in a bookstore, so I read a copy when it came in and laughed my a** off. It is meant to be a release from the STRESS of being a parent...like a "what you wish you could say, but NEVER would." Yes, there are many children out there with terrible lives, blah, blah, blah...this is just some humor for the parents who may need a little laugh over parenting and it's NOT for their kids to ever see. What is the harm? Sometimes "normal" people need a little care, too. (BTW, I've was a teacher for 20 years; reading a book like this is NOT going to change a person's parenting skills....)

My mom used to say "If you don't go to sleep I'm going to kill you." another favorite of hers was "ring you neck!"

Around age 13, I was frustrated with my sister and said "I'm going to kill you" my mother saw no relation to her own use of the expression and called the police. I was arrested, charged and convicted of uttering death threats. I got rid of the habit pretty quick, but my mother still expresses herself this way.

This also reminds me of why I don't talk to my sister anymore. I can't stand her victim mentality when it comes to her young step-daughter. While in the child's presence she would say "This little brat is messing everything up for me." and "If she'd just grow up mom could get some things done." She was always hurling blame at the child and centering everything around herself. I had a half a mind to give her on the subject and she "disowned" me as her brother.

Sort of that reaction I was suggesting earlier. She felt so justified in her anger toward the child and I wasn't helping, so she hates me too. But I couldn't stand it.

"I don’t like violent language in association with children."

Violent language, as in, "...when the bough breaks / the cradle will fall / and down will come baby / cradle and all"?

As a mother of two, one of which is severly Autistic, I found this story to be very funny. I showed it to my partner and he thought it was funny too. It's harmless. This woman is an Attorney? I find that hard to believe and if I was looking for someone to represent me, I would not chose her because she comes across as an idiot. Very sad. Most childrens rhymes are based on horrible events of the past. I feel sorry for her children.

Lighten up lady! Sheesh...

People shouldn't lose their sense of self just because they have become parents. It's perfectly normal for a parent to want their kid to "Go the F**k to Sleep" in order to get some time to themselves.

As someone who works in a school, everyday I see that parents who put their children above all else, cater to their every whim, and completely devote every living minute to them, are the parents who raise brats. Brats who grow up to have unrealistic expectations of how others should treat them.

@observer:

You showed it to your "partner"? Do you mean your business partner?

I'm just curious. Why don't you use the term "husband" or the generic "spouse"? Is there something you find offensive or bothersome about those words?

You can understand that maybe some people are bothered by words that you're not, and that you may be bothered by words that they're not.
