The PC version of Portal 2 launched today. Obviously, there will be a drop in productivity in all sectors, and no reason to bother holding class. Geoff Pado's professor gave in. Link -via reddit

Well, if I had been the professor, I would have held class and given a surprise extra credit assignment to those who came to class.
Those students who were planning on being absent to play a stupid video game have no respect.
I hate professors that reward people for doing whats expected of their students. If most of your class is gone you will end up reteaching things next time regardless so might as well cancel class.
Ric, You can't have it both ways. I agree that there is no reason to reward students who did what is expected of them, but to cancel class is rewarding the ones that skipped...and actually punishes the ones that took the time to show up.
It seems most reasonable to have class as usual. The people that skipped can make up the work like they would have any other time.
Then the science gets done and you've got a neat gun for the people who are still alive.
Note that the "Make-up" lecture appears to be outside of normal school hours "5-7PM" on a Wednesday. It looks like Wednesday is going to be a long day.
@lulu: I'm pretty sure "play(ing) Portal" is just the professional way of acknowledging that the majority of his class will be high as crap tomorrow. Personally, I commend him for his general awesomeness.
Well they are learning a valuable lesson here, aren't they. Because obviously their supervisors will be JUST as understanding when they all skip work when Portal 3 comes out. Right.
My copy of Portal did not come today and I am not happy about it. UPS still says it is out for delivery but IT IS 9:26 PM. They better not have stolen my copy.
in korea the day starcraft 2 came out most businesses were closed

one of my least favorite things about college professors is that they always assume their students are deceiving them. sometimes somebodies mother really does die and in that situation it is wholly inappropriate for a professor to doubt the given reason for their absence from a class that was a pointless waste of time anyway and shouldn't have even been required for that persons major because it has nothing to do with what that person studied.
Hey, why don't you guys think about HIS copy of portal? Cancelling class would allow the prof to play as well. =D After, this time, there will probably be cake at the end...
I have taught many a year and most students who ask for clemency of some sort are lying.
Those who are not lying offer proof of what they speak and professors would never be unsympathetic to a death in the family, for heaven's sake.
Besides, teachers know which students are honest and which aren't. It's always amazing that students never understand that teachers ''get'' you. They think they are faking us out. We are not stupid.
