1 in 4 Meat in US Contaminated with Drug-Resistant Staph

Thinking of grilling a steak this weekend? Well, don't read this, then: a disturbing new study revealed that about a quarter of all meat and poultry sampled from around the United States have drug-resitant strains of Staphylococcus aureus.

About half — 47% of the samples — contained S. aureus, the researchers reported Friday in Clinical Infectious Diseases. Of those bacteria, 52% were resistant to at least three classes of antibiotics. DNA testing suggested the animals were the source of contamination. The research was funded by the Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming.

"The fact that drug-resistant S. aureus was so prevalent, and likely came from the food animals themselves, is troubling, and demands attention to how antibiotics are used in food-animal production today," said Lance Price, lead author of the study and director of TGen's Center for Food Microbiology and Environmental Health, said in a news release.

Well I've been eating meat almost daily for decades, and I've gotten sick from it twice. Once from undercooked chicken, once from a too old fish. I've gotten sick more often from poorly prepared vegetables. Bottom line: I'm not worried.

Has anyone else noticed they aren't calling this by it's more commonly known name, MRSA? I guess they don't want to panic anyone, but Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is what they're talking about.

Sounds like one of the little-mentioned downsides of "organic" beef. If your cows get sick, you're not allowed to give them medicine (like antibiotics) to make them well again.

@WordyGrrl, actually, you have that backwards. This is the little mentioned downsides of non 'organic' meat. Antibiotics and hormones are used constantly in animal feed to make them fatter for butchering. The overuse of these antibiotics results in resistant strains of infectious diseases. Not only in the animals that are butchered, but the people who eat them. They also overuse antibiotics because the animals are stacked one on top of each other, creating more of a breading ground for illness. I don't know of any organic farm that is against using antibiotics if an animal has an infection, that is silly. I'm not sure where you heard that from.

It's amazing that some people don't understand the implications of such a high incidence rate of drug-resistant bacteria in meats.

It's not about whether eating a steak will make you sick, it's about how the abuse of antibiotics in factory farms is leading to more resilient bacteria. Infections from these bacteria will be increasingly difficult to treat when you become sick from these emerging strains of bacteria, which you inevitably will-- not just from undercooked meats, but also from vegetables fertilized with contaminated manure.

There will never be a time when all people understand an issue, the fact that some people seem to think there will be is laughable.

Buy local, from responsible farmers. Only money talks, high and mighty social argument does nothing.
