Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel: "What Is Internet?"

(YouTube link)

This vintage 1994 Today Show clip features a snarky Bryant Gumbel and a bubbly Katie Couric - sporting a hairdo that looks like it should have been preserved in a time capsule - both completely mystified at the terminology of this wacky new Internet fad. And for that matter just "what is Internet" anyway? Can someone explain it to us? Because as we all know new technology is to be ignored and scorned, since network television as we know it is perfect and will never, ever be replaced or surpassed.

Ahhhh... this brings back fond memories of my husband and I in our first apartment. I was becoming familiar with the inner workings of AOL, and there was a little icon at the top of the screen that said 'the Web'.

"What's the web?" I asked.

"Click it," he answered.

Good times.

Ok, I'm probably weird but after the Northridge quake (which I'm guessing is the one they're talking about), I got so use to the aftershocks that I had a hard time falling asleep if there weren't any. A couple small ones put me at peace.

Love the NBC version of the @ sign. Wonder if their video production equipment at the time was even able to generate one.

How funny is that looking back in time. "What is the internet". Now the question is "what is that tweeter thing". Thanks for posting - this is my best laugh of the day.
