Mother Jailed for Sending Kids to Wrong School

Just ask any mother: what would you do to provide a better education for your children?

Kelley Williams-Bolar, a single mother who's going to college and working as a teaching assistant (and who has no prior criminal record) while living in a housing project, claimed that her two daughters live part time with their father who lives in a better school district.

The school disagreed, and hired a private investigator to film her dropping off her children. They wanted to charge her $30,000 and when she refused, the case went to court and the jury convicted her. The judge sentenced her to 5 years in prison, but suspended all but 10 days, with community service and probation.

Williams-Bolar's father, Edward Williams, told CNN affiliate WJW-TV that the children did live with him, so he believed the family was within the law.

He said his daughter's Akron neighborhood – where she lives in government-subsidized housing – isn't safe.

"She had 12 police reports that her house had been broken in, so what am I supposed to do? Just leave them there?" Williams said to WJW-TV. "I mean, I can protect them better if they was with me."

Williams-Bolar, a single mother, works as a teacher's aide at a high school in Akron and is just 12 credits away from earning a teaching degree at the University of Akron, according to the Beacon Journal.

Her felony conviction will bar her from being licensed to teach in Ohio.

The school, obviously, disagreed:

Copley-Fairlawn Superintendent Brian Poe told WJW-TV the case cost the district $30,000 in two years of lost tuition and $6,000 it spent on the investigation. [...]

"The way I look at it is, the bottom line, you need to follow the law," he said. "If you choose to step outside of the law, what's going to happen at that point is you are going to have to face the consequences for that."

Oh, and to make matters a bit muddier, Williams-Bolar is black and the school district is predominantly white.

"Fraud is fraud" or do you think that it's a heavy-handed punishment for someone trying to make better lives for their children?

(I do understand that school vouchers as currently posited, are intended for private schools. I think all schools, public and private, should have to 'work' for their dollars in this way, though.)

I feel very sorry for her. I see nothing evil in her intentions. I have heard so many parents say that they would do anything to help their kids. This is an example of a parent who did just that.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
This makes me sick. They choose to waste money prosecuting her when there are so many serious issues? I'm disgusted. One can hope that the public outcry is strong enough to get something changed for this lady.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
So all the legal taxpaying parents should just suck it up and let someone that is NOT paying anything towards the cost of running their school just slip their kids in and not care?
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Glad to see that the legal precedent of Javert v Valjean is being upheld.

Also, keep in mind that the way Ohio runs its school districts was found to be unconstitutional but they haven't gotten around to fixing it yet.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
how in the flying f*ck are they coming up with 30k for lost tuition and 6fuckingthosuand dollars in investigation money? Did they hire the actor Don Johnson to come to their town to investigate this crime as Miami Vice's Crockett? Gigantic douchebags, that whole school board. I would pull my kid out of that school so f'ing fast they wouldn't even notice that I'd left a flaming bag of dogshit in her seat.

This is heavy handed justice, and to make things worse they've used bloated and illogical numbers to back up their douchbaggery. Epic fail, Akron. epic. fail.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Punishment way out of line with the offense. For this to be a felony is hard to believe. I can see denying admittance and maybe requiring her to pay costs, but to go to jail on a felony?

Come on people!
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
She must have pissed someone off or something. Does that school send a PI after every student to assure their address? Is it racial? personal? there's something here not being mentioned.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Dear Akron, Ohio School Board,

Hi, I hear the going rate for detective work in your city is through the f*cking roof! I would like to personally extend an offer of my own investigatory services to you. Obviously, no matter how nominal the crime, you seem to have the funds to overpay for any kind of "investigation." Citing the recent case of Miss Williams-Bolar, I see that you paid someone $6,000 for what appears to be extremely simple clerical work. By extremely simple I mean you could have imported a $6,000 chimpanzee from Whereeverthefuckchimpanzeesarefrom, Africa and gotten very similar results.

So remember, day or night, 24/7, call me, text me, or pay researchers to invent a new way of communicating with holograms like in Star Wars, whatever completely over exaggerated method you can think of to spend a shitload of money to do a simple task, do that and I promise to do any ridiculous, mind-numbingly illogical job you have for me... as long as you're willing to pay me a million times what the task is worth.

Thanks,
Noah

Tom, I find the verbally abusive responses to the story kind of entertaining.

Plain and simple: did she commit fraud? Isn't every con artist/ thief / criminal trying to make a better life for him/herself and his/her children? That's not really a justification for fraud.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
@vonskippy

The children's father lived in the district, and paid taxes.

But hey, you're right. Clearly the punishment was too light. I say we publicly vivisect her! That will be just payment for a slight against the almighty state!
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
You know the tree by its fruits. The family tried to take a shortcut instead of actually making it right. The school is in serious need of getting its priorities straight!
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
This is so wrong, I think the mom did the right thing by trying to get her kids in a good school, they could have told her that she couldn't send the kids there anymore, but no, they tried to make an example by prosecuting the poor woman. Did you see in the article that the school is a predominately white school. I think that she was targeted. You would not have seen this happen if the school was more diverse.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
I applaude her for trying to get her kids into a better school. It's sad that her future is now ruined for doing so. Public Education is free and if your school district is not making the cut, I see no problem with going to another school. Make her pay some additional taxes or something but don't ruin the mothers life for doing what is seemingly the right thing to do.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Good thinking on the felony charge. Now she won't be able to work. Single mom, out of work, kids in a bad neighborhood. Good way to end things.

A simple citation or court order would have sufficed, I think. There's no need for this Biblical response.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
I wonder how well her kids were doing in school? It could have been one of the white parents that tipped off the school district after their kid was out-performed by a child who was happy to be attending a good school. Sad, sad
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
America be messed up!

In the Australian Public school system as far as I'm aware you can choose any of the public schools. The only cost difference is in the transport - $10 a year to get the local school bus, or parents could drive you as far as an hour away - if they so wished to. And like someone else pointed out - if the father is paying taxes in that district - what difference does it make if the kids are predominantly with their mother or father?
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
She was not the only one investigated. She is the only parent who refused to pay the tuition. If her father lives near the school, why doesnt she just move in with him and away from the crime ridden area? That was part of her defense. I do feel for her, but the property taxes in the district and area pay for the school. It was either tuition or nothing and she chose to fight.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
People do things they know aren't legal, but feel are morally right. Sometimes people get caught. They have to deal with the punishment. She must have forged some documents and told some lies along the way.

I don't blame her for what she did, but she was caught and now has to pay the price.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Isn't the father already paying the taxes, etc? The school wasn't making any more money if the kids spent 2 extra nights a week in his house... So really, what's the financial argument here? Taxes WERE paid...

Bottom line is our society may be getting domestic partner benefits but kids certainly aren't getting anything from having multiple houses and parents, etc.. I'm guessing they aren't divorced or the separation would have spelled out where the kids lived legally. Even then, a sharing agreement can be vague on residency.

Stupid to be a felony though. 'Tough on crime' indeed...
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
@Mataeka, actually there are set school districts for Australian public schools. If you do not reside in the district you go on a waiting list to get in the school which may take many years. I know people in Aus who have faked their addresses to get their kids into the school they wanted.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Fraud is fraud - as a teaching assistant she knew better. If she didn't she's too stupid to be teaching anyone anything.

And that whole "muddier" comment is just race baiting. And, it just got Neatorama removed from my favorites.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Is would nOt happen in the UK I feel school for her. You should have the right to send you kids to what ever school you want. You want the best for them and not someone telling you what's best for them
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
This is a despicable act of corporate government. Instead of doing anything to help improve lives they do what they always do, and destroy one even more than they need to in the name of money.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
As a taxpaying non-parent, I'd like my tax dollars to pay for her children's education, please.

This is outrageous and ridiculous. Who exactly was harmed in this process? Were children prevented from attending school because hers were there? Doubtful. Now the poor woman who was just trying to lift her family out of poverty has a FELONY record. This is just another example of what's wrong with our country.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
This makes me furious! There's no way this woman should have been punished that harshly if at all. She's only trying to better her life and the lives of her children. If ever there were a case where a slap on the wrist should be the worst punishment this is it. But instead they are ruining her life by preventing her from becoming a teacher. There is no way this is ought to be a felony.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
I hope she gets jail time. What she did is the same thing that illegals do in the US. She used fake identification to steal. She doesn't pay for taxes in the district so others have to support her kids.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
She's 12 credits away from a teaching degree and she's quoted as saying "I mean, I can protect them better if they was with me."

....she could, if they were with me.

Other than that, it's a tough situation.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
For all you bleeding heart people - where do you draw the line?

Let her in - sure, she's a hard working well meaning mother trying to be a public teacher. How about a dozen of her neighbors - after all they're good mothers too. How about 100 children from poor neighborhoods with dedicated mothers - 1000?

My tax dollars go to my schools for MY kids. If you like our school, buy a house in it's district. It's that simple. Don't like your school - move.

I already pay enough for your kids education via Federal tax - I can't afford to do it with property tax too.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
As long as the father is living in the town, dont his taxes cover the cost of the school? On another note, I think we should get rid of the Federal Dept of Education completely. They have accomplished nothing since they were created in the 70s and that nothing has cost us hundreds of billions of dollars. It is useless. Stop charging taxes for NOTHING...let people spend their money locally to send their kids to the school they choose. This will keep the schools more accountable to the parents and the community. ALSO, getting rid of the Dept of Ed will free up teachers, schools and parents to set their own curricula based on their own ideas of what is important, which may vary from state to state, town to town.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Both. It seems a bit heavy-handed, however she did commit fraud.

I plan on avoiding this type of problem completely by homeschooling my kids or sending them to private school (should a decent one open or re-open around here).
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Too heavy-handed.

Slap on the wrist. Your app is denied. Move, or prove your case at an appellate board meeting, then you can have the kids over.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Public education isn't evil. It can work out well just as it may end poorly.

That being said, the fact that Williams-Bolar committed fraud is true, and she is serving her punishment for that. Whether or not her actions are justified, the fact that she felt compelled to deceive a good school to accept her children isn't acceptable.

The current public education system restricts children to the district and the school they are designated, and there are times when neither children nor parents are able to anything about it. Some schools do a very poor job at what they should be doing, and that will have a great effect on the children's later prospects.

When parents and children are stuck with a school like that, they have very few options. They can buy their way into a better school district if they have the money. Otherwise, they are confined.

If the parents aren't wealthy enough to move into another district, that doesn't mean that their children somehow deserve a less comprehensive education. Some people may not appreciate the fact that their taxes go to educating other, poorer children, but the wealth gap really shouldn't control what opportunities we allow people to have. Preventing these children from getting a decent education will only widen that wealth gap and cripple our country's everything.

The problem presented isn't so much in the problems caused by the mother, but by the problems that caused her actions. I can sympathize.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
I seem to have a problem understanding this article... Is there a law against black people attending white schools in america or something? Isn't apartheid over? Because it surly can't be because they didn't live in the same district. I never attended a school even close to my home b/c my mother was always looking for the best school for me, which not only is legal in europe but also normal.
Oh, well, maybe you americans have too few criminals or something, so you have the need to make them out of perfectly normal responsible people...
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
The real crime here is the poor quality of some schools (that a kid can be stuck having to attend).

The level of empathy for other people displayed by some posters here is overwhelming. Not!
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
That is seriously screwed up.
I feel so bad for her and her children now. All she wanted to do was give her children a chance in a better school.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
why does some troll always have to post a comment like "what is neat about this". I love this site, there are always interesting things on it but interestingorama doesn't have the same ring to it.keep up the good work guys.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
@vonskippy
I also pay property taxes, yet do not have children, would you mind refunding the part of my money that subsidized your children's education?

I also only drive on a handful of the roads in my city, and visit public pools a few times per season- can I get a refund for the unused portion of those public goods?
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
What I don't understand is, if the father is quoted as saying "I mean, I can protect them better if they was with me." then ... why wasn't this just a fact, and there's no story? Why WEREN'T they living part time with him, if it's for their protection? Why are they living full time with the mother and the mother lying about their residency?
I get that a parent will do what they need to do... but the grandfather shouldn't be opening his mouth saying things he's not backing up. He should not be saying 'they are better off with me' if ... they aren't actually WITH him.
If the house has been broken into a dozen times, do you want your children living in that house? When there's a house near by that is safer, in a better neighborhood, with a better school? Why isn't the father taking care of his daughter and her children? I can't see what's going on from all the smoke due to back pedaling.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Wow. If Albuquerque public schools were to ever find out how many parents were doing this, and then sued the parents - their entire budget crisis would be fixed.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
You're totally right Vonskippy... Leave the poor black people in their place. God, how dare she try to get a better education for her kids. Silly bitch.

:/
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
@Slick Willy: As a single woman, with no kids, paying nearly $3,000 a year in school taxes (for KIDS I DON'T HAVE), I'm highly offended by your comment that Public School is FREE.

They're closing in on 7000 signatures. Has been an interesting post to follow.
Alex, I hope you'll keep us posted about what ultimately happens...
As others have mentioned, there doesn't seem to be any doubt that she did something wrong. But- the punishment doesn't at all fit the crime- I mean a felony(?!)- whoa. And the amount of $$ spent by the school to prove it- if I had kids in that district, I'd be more upset about that than about her kids being there.

"My tax dollars go to my schools for MY kids."

Heyyy...and MY tax dollars go to YOUR schools for YOUR kids too! I pay several hundred dollars a year in school taxes EVERY year and I DON'T HAVE KIDS! I hope your kids are enjoying their nice school in their nice district where you moved to your nice house so your kids don't have to rub elbows with any 'hood rats from the projects. Just keep in mind that there are plenty of other childless people out there just like me who are forced to help pay for little Jimmy and Susie to have the laptop your Snob Hill school district hands out to every kid and who gives a crap about the kids of a single mother over in the HUD Alley part of town? They aren't from YOUR neighborhood so why should they have their hand in YOUR pocket? Never mind that their mother has been working hard for years to better herself and provide for her kids. BY HERSELF. Never mind that she wasn't a crackhead or a welfare queen pumping out a kid every year so the government handouts keep coming and she won't have to go to the botheration of working for the rest of her life.

If thinking this is shameful and disgusting makes me a "bleeding heart" then so be it. At least I *HAVE* a heart, you self-righteous pig bastard.

I like your comment, dooflotchie @54.

I don't feel I should have much of a say on how schools are run in America, given I don't live there, but I can't help but think the citizens would be better served if more people put their effort into fixing the REASONS people would lie about their district.
